Title: Is garlic more expensive this year?
Post by: caroline7758 on November 10, 2012, 17:17:40
I found exactly the same garlic (Taylor's Marco) that I bought at RHS Harlow Carr last year at £2.99 for 3 bulbs at Wyevale for £2.99 for 2 bulbs!

Has anyone else found it has gone up?

I bought Taylor's Marco with three bulbs in a pack. Did you just pick up the wrong pack? It was from Fairweather's in Beaulieu.

I have just found the packaging for my Taylor's Marco, and the price is printed into the cardboard, three for £2.99. It didn't look like last year's!

I've planted thirty cloves which I saved from some I got in the market and grew last year, and as soon as I've done another raised bed I'll plant some from bulbs I bought the other week.

Maybe I'm going mad- or mixed up my varieties! :)

BTW is it ok to replant bulbs which suffered rust? The bulbs themselves look fine.

Yes, the rust won't be in the cloves, and they're clones so one clove will be no more susceptible than another.

I've found a quite  good deal on ebay: 20 cloves of nice hardneck "Harnas"  for £1.50. Reasonable postage £2.
Garlic came from Poland within a week, very nice cloves. Due to the origin of this variety there should be no risk of frost killing it over winter, not sure about the rain though....
I shall let you know in June how it performed.

I've planted other varieties as well, including elephant garlic. Some of the very late planted cloves (late April) managed only to become rounds so they in for the second round.  Also planted all the bulbits from this year. If everything grows, 2013 will be a "Year of Garlic" for me. (still some more to plant in the spring...  :blob7:)
