Title: Tomato - new non watery variety
Post by: kt. on November 04, 2012, 20:46:33
A neighbouring plot holder mentioned that a recent gardening program showed a new variety of tomato that had been developed.  It was just as juicy etc but had very little water when cut.  He is not sure if it was to be on sale or had just been developed; so my question is - has anybody heard of this variety?

Not a gardening programme, it was on Food Unwrapped, shown on Channel 4.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/food-unwrapped/4od

From the blurb: The Intense Tomato, launched in 2007, is very firm, with few seeds, and makes hardly any juice when squeezed, but is incredibly tasty and a deep red colour.

I dont know if it is available to the public but it did make me think about buying a sandwich for the seeds.

Would the seeds come true though - Sounds like it is a hybrid to me...
Some info here http://www.intensetomatoes.com

Indeed it is a hybrid - http://www.nunhems.co.uk/www/NunhemsInternet.nsf/id/CW_EN_Intense_tomatoes_-_An_amazing_success_story

Edit - I have emailed them to see if I can buy some seeds

There is a type of tomato, called 'paste tomato', which is used for cooking, drying, ketchup and tomato concentrate in tubes.  These are naturally lower in 'water', denser and thicker walled.  They are usually plum tomatoes.

Here is a bit about paste tomatoes and variety recommendations (apologies, there is an annoying pop-up)

Problem is, when you buy your butty, how do you know its going to be that particular tomato?

Well I got a response from Bayer about Intense Tom seeds.  They said that they cant sell me seeds as they are for professional growers only.
They have offered to send me some tomatos though.  Which is sort of wierd but a nice gesture.
As they are a hybrid then I guess there is little chance of them coming true but if any of you clever people fancy a stab at growing them then Ill send you seeds - if there are any!

Grow them on and you should at least get similar toms. Select the best each year, and you'll soon have your own, similar, variety.

Yes I saw the programme. The idea was to create a tomato that had very little water to go in sandwiches  so it didn't soak the bread when stored for sale.
You might be able to get one from the second (F2) generation that has similar properties. I would be interested to know what you get!
Here is an article about how they create F1 hybrids. The difficult thing is keeping the heavily inbred parents alive! Not surprising considering inbreeding leads to the appearance of recessive diseases.
