Title: Black Forest "climbing" courgettes?
Post by: artichoke on November 03, 2012, 19:53:12
Who else grew these? 75p per seed from T&M, only 4 in the packet. Did you think it worth it? I resented the price, but the plants were very productive, even though I let them sprawl rather than climb. They ran around under my sweetcorn very successfully, and the courgettes were tender and tasty.

Possibly a lot of plant science has gone into persuading courgettes into being bushes, and this reversion to type is a bit pointless as well as expensive - just want to know other people's opinions.

Black Forest has been around for a long time so I cannot understand why they were so expensive.

In the 2010 surprise Christmas present when we were raising money for Gardening Leave I included a F1 version of Black Forest called Black Hawk but never got any feedback on how they preformed.

I was sure we had a thread about Black  Hawk last year, but I can only find one mention of it.... My plants were given the chance to scramble over hoops, but just didn't bother! They cropped well and got big quite quickly, but I don't think I'd grow them again....

I grew Black Hawk from seeds that Daveyboi kindly sent me.

Mine didn't climb or sprawl but remained as bushes which
didn't seem any different to the usual courgette varieties.

Thanks for the information on the Black Hawk folks
I did think I had saved a packet for myself but could not find it when seed sowing time came.

If you want a climber I would suggest Tromba d'Albenga.   They can be eaten as a courgette or kept for the winter.

Actually a curcurbita moschata so more closely related to a butternut squash.   But easier to grow and crop well.
