Post by: RenishawPhil on October 23, 2012, 17:44:59
Ive just realised that we havent lifted our carrots as just picked some today and very nice they are to

Have other people lifted theres yet or are they leaving them in the ground?

will the frost damage them ?, if so should i get them up this week before the big freeze?

In my experiance they will survive a mild frost but get spoilt if really cold, still edible but not pristine!

My carrots have mainly grown well and some have grown fairly big but they have been decimated by carrot fly. The ones I picked early weren't too bad but I have to chuck most of the ones I pull now. Next year I have to construct well made barriers to get anywhere. I know they hunt by sight and scent but do you get worse infestations if the ground has a residue of previous populations?
Though I have old hedgerows nearby and I hear their song, this year I never got stalked by any robins as I worked. I believe they spot insect eggs such as carrot fly. I was saying today I might take a packet of robin food on my trips there to attract them.

I leave mine in the ground until I need them - It takes a really severe frost to damage them and as I am in the South I can get away with leaving them there for quite a while..

I grow Autumn King, and had no problems leaving them in the ground in the severe winter of 2009/2010.
