Title: Shoe sizes
Post by: goodlife on October 18, 2012, 19:58:02
Would some of you help me with little measuring task?...please?
I just need to know your foot size in cm..heel to toe and what uk shoe size do you normally fit in?

And suppose little explanation for this in place. Well...I bought some shoe lasts (different sizes) as I'm about to undertake slipper making bonanza..but the last sizes won't tally with what they are supposed to be.
I know there is shoe size charts available..but as my lasts are not made for 'shoes' and the fitting is very different, charts would be just for rough guidance.
So to categorize the sizes for my own use..little consumer help would be in place  :toothy10:

I know:
225mm = 22.5 cm but I can't understand how 21 cm = size 4.

Thank you for your replies...they are big help! If I could get few more measuments 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 to confirm what I've already discovered with smaller ones. Looks last sizes are VERY generous as they seem to be 1 to 1/2 size bigger than 'normal'...being quite wide as well might have forgiving influence as well.

Here is first ones..not finished yet they are still drying out and once dry there is some finishing touches to be done. No so much to the bigger pair but the smaller ones are getting some decorative deedle work done to girly them up  :toothy10: And that pair will be MINE!

I first knit them flat and then they've been sown together ..they need to be much bigger than finished result. Once sown, they've then hand washed in very hot water with wool soap and rubbed so they start to felt. Once they've started shrink I slip them over the lasts and keep rubbing until they fit the lasts snugly. Then I keep rinsing and rubbing alternatively under hot and cold water so the felting tighten up even further. Then they've been rubbed with towels to get rid of excess water and left to dry.
That's is...easy peasy...going to have a go? You will need wool that is not treated to avoid shrinkage.
I spin my own wool so the yarn is its 'raw' stage.

Well done you, GL. It looks far too complicated for me, but a great end result, I didn't know how felt things were made, so thanks for the info!

Normally felting just involves wool being 'matted' with help of soap and water..I've done extra work with knitting the wool, it is not the usual way of doing felting.

Fabulous!  Is there anything you can't do???  You must be the most practical and clever woman I know.  I was in awe about your plumbing skills.  Spinning, felting, knitting, sowing - amazing!

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-ashamed001.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)..uh..thanks..but no, I can't claim to be clever, just incredible tight with my purse strings :toothy10: I don't want to pay rip off prices if I can make it myself and the info how to do things is out there.. :icon_cheers:
Drives me mad to have workman to do a job and ending up wacthing the results and thinking "I could have done that myself..better!" :BangHead:
I've been watching Wartime Farm program with interest..and it is incredible how diverse with their skills women had to be. I've got loads still to learn...

mine measure 23 cm and I wear 5.5 usually if I can get them, but recent purchases have been continental size 38 and 39. ( I say recent meaning a couple of years ago, I either wear work shoes, sandals or wellies! )

My next request has nothing to do with the heading...but as I'm still on the same subject, I'll carry on.

Right...I've now made pair of ballet 'shoe' like felt slippers..but cannot decide...with or without flower...fun or classic(without decoration)...heeeeelp!
