Title: PLANTS OF DISTINCTION CATALOGUE!!
Post by: Duke Ellington on October 03, 2012, 21:33:03
I received mine this week and now I have a dilemma. They are selling so many different varieties of tomatoes that I can't make up mind as to what to grow next year.

Does anyone else have this catalogue?

Slightly off-topic - I notice they have 'Sacher' tomato.  I picked these up last year as a new variety for my parents and in a challenging year (at their place the weather wasn't much better than in the UK), these did best of all, better than the usual varieties my mother always grows and likes. Interesting is that Sacher was sold as open pollinated and POD says it is an F1.  This may well be a mistake, because other sources on the internet also say they are OP.  Mid-size round chocolate coloured, early and not bad tasting.  Quite robust and not as thin skinned as some heirlooms, but fruits stayed attractive looking.

I've grown Sacher F1 as well this year but I'm doubting the ones I had are the right variety as no chocolate colour just a sad red really?  They have have been a disappointment although they have produced a decent enough crop. Bombonera F1 are a gorgeous colour in comparison. Was the colour good on your parents tomatoes and importantly how did they taste?

As far as I know they are an F1 seed developed by Suntime http://www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=92576

Tomato wise I'm fancying German Pink, Big PinkF1?, Pink Wonder F1, Sacher F1, Brandy Boy F1?,  Big Daddy F1?, Luciebell F1 Marinda F1 (I've grown some f2 Marinda this year which have produced an interesting selection of types, flavour is pretty good)

I think next year I'll grow a few more hybrids as they do seem to produce more of a crop than some heritage/open pollinated varieties in a difficult year.

They were like the standard 'black' tomato, ie brown and their flavour was not as good as Black Krim for example, but they were more regular in shape and 'prettier', more like a commercial tomato, if you like.  Compared to Black Icicle (which is even better than Black Krim), they were not as tasty, but at least they produced for my parents unlike their Black Krim, which were all still green last week.  It did fine in a difficult year in comparison to Black Krim and a few other non-black types.

Thank you for the links.  This is the packet I bought earlier this year for my parents:

No mention of hybrid anywhere.  As in the UK, all European seed companies have to say clearly whether a veg is F1 or not on the packet, hence the confusion.  The colour at my parents was definitely brown and they looked similar to the picture on the packet, but not as brown as the middle picture in your first link.  This was a picture from Italy, maybe latitude affects the intensity of the brown colour in this tomato?

Thanks Galina, I'm not sure I'm in such a rush to buy some Sacher F1 seeds now, they do look great in the catalogues though.
I loved Black Icicle last year, this year I think due to the weather they are not as sweet or tasty but still good, production is fantastic again though, I like these   :sunny:

Edit to add I've added some pictures of Black Icicle and Sacher F1 here http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,73851.0.html
