Title: Peppadew question
Post by: Squash64 on September 06, 2012, 16:32:25
A kind A4A'er kindly sent me some Peppadew seeds this year.  They have grown into very tall plants (about 4ft) and have quite a few small peppers on them.  I have never seen Peppadews in shops - I suppose they turn red eventually?

Yes..they will turn red..eventually.. ::) This year all chillies and peppers seem to take ages to ripen up. Hopefully this warm spell will kick start ripening.
Peppadews are commercial brand and breeders right are attached to the name.. the peppers are sold stuffed in jars...see here.. http://www.peppadew.com/products/en/0/

So glad you have at least some green Peppadews Betty! I have two plants, one indoor and one in GH that, like yours, are very tall - but neither of them have even flowered yet! There are some tiny flower buds appearing now, so I'll bring the second plant indoors before it gets too cold and will probably be picking the red fruit at Christmas  ::). There are lots of fruit on the Cayenne plant, but they are not even beginning to turn red yet. All the chillies were sown at the beginning of January. Must be the poor weather and bad light. Persevere - I love Peppadews filled with cream cheese - juicy and crunchy.

Thanks Goodlife and Tricia for your replies.

All my other chillies have done really well and I've had loads ripening without any problems.  The peppadews were sown a bit later than the others so they are bound to be a later to ripen I suppose.

I'm really pleased they have survived and grown so well because when we had the break-in last May a lot of them ended up on the floor out of their pots and I was worried they'd got damaged.  Seems to have done them good! ;)

My plant managed to ripen 3 fruits last year..and those were after I brought the plant indoors later on the year. I over wintered it and this year it looks like entirely different beast..loads of fruit and flowers on and grown into big bush...just need to get the fruit ripe.
My plan is trim the plant small 'stick', roots and all, and pot into smaller pot and over winter it again.
