Title: Are blight resistant tomatoes worth growing?
Post by: Duke Ellington on September 02, 2012, 08:04:03
I have had such a bad year with tomatoes. Even my greenhouse tomatoes succumbed to blight. Has anyone had success growing blight resistant types?

I've tried Ferline, they were the ones that got blight first and did not taste great eather.

I also tried Ferline this year both in greenhouse and outside and had very good results compared to previous blight ridden years - particularly considering how wet its been. Will definitely grow again.

My Ferline were wiped out with all the other varieties this year.

Well in my greenhouse i have lost varieties like black russian and golden sunrise to blight but the plants of sungold and gardeners delight sitting next to them are still okay, one or two little brown patches but no sudden collapse like the others so, i'm more likely to stick with them than try the marketed blight resistant types.

Koralik. Just keep going when all others are composted/burnt.

Yes I agree absolutely. Koralik is amazingly resistant.

Are there any other ways of minimising blight like growing other plants as wind breaks or deterrents?

think i've got a korlik that is still surviving whilst all the others were infected (all outdoor and in same patch), tho' the yield is rather small as it's rather shaded by the raspberries next to them.. ::)

I grew Koralik and Losetto last year but few problems with blight anyway.  They did not taste very good to me.  Though sungold grown with them was not tasty either, I think I gave them too much comfrey tea.

However, they have self seeded and they are great.  No problems with blight and some of the plants have quite a nice flavour.    I am trying to mark which ones so I can keep some seed.

I saved seeds from my last years Mastkotka outdoor plants as they did so well and they have
managed to remain blight free so far, so will do the same next year!

I also have lost Ferline very early two years running - might have to revise my plan not to grow any more tomatoes now I see this list of possibilities!
