I know there's been discussion about the benefits or otherwise of grated tomatoes. I've bought one or two plants for the last four years, as I'd read they are more resistant to blight. Certainly I've found that to be the case, (where we are in SW France) and they look much stronger and healthier for the whole summer. But for me the other benefit is the enormous crop they give. I always let the bottom four side shoots grow on, and then fasten them to their own cane, leaning out somewhat, to give them as much space as possible. This year I bought an 'ordinary' tomato type, not cherry, and not beef sort. We were able to start harvesting them three weeks ago, and I counted the number of tomatoes after that week. I reckoned there were over 100 tomatoes, and they are all a good size, weighing in at around 6oz each. And they taste quite good too.
Watch this space as well, as we've some fairly big Délice de Burpée tomatoes coming along, I think, well over 1lb in weight. Fingers crossed! All our tomatoes are outdoors, and apart from watering them in well when we planted them out in May, they've only been watered by hand about four times, and not fed either. They just have to get on with it themselves.
