Title: Choose one Rose?
Post by: katynewbie on August 19, 2012, 09:39:10
I want to get a rose for the garden, but the range is huge and I am finding it hard to choose. I want a very fragrant one, and probably not yellow, but apart from that am open to advice. If you had to choose just one, which one would it be and why?

Uh..just one..? ::)..but if it would be only for its fragrance..Fragrant Cloud..it does what it say 'in a tin'. You don't need to pick many stems into vase and the whole room has nice rose scent.
I haven't been able to narrow down just to one rose in my garden and at the moment it is 'sniffers' paradise.. ;D
I like the look of 'English Roses'..and most of them come with heady fragrance too.

Ps..on that site is good rose search on left hand side.

I've recently planted Young Lycidas, William Shakespeare and Munstead Wood in groups of three - they are all stunning and have wonderful perfumes.

I agree with Goodlife it would have to be Fragrant Cloud.

Just Joey - funny name, fragrant, copper coloured and very strong and reliable - shrugs off drought and deluge.  The best here.  Fragrant Cloud is also good but not such a robust rose.

The OP asked for yellow so I would recommend Teasing Georgia which is a David Austin repeat flowering rose with good colour and fragrance.  It's healthy and can be grown as a shrub or short climber and has proved very hardy in my garden where winters can be very cold.   It did get zapped by that very untimely deep frost in spring when the sap was already rising but has recovered well.

I also have Malvern Hills which is a repeat flowering rambler with softer yellow flowers and good perfume.
