Title: Packing up.
Post by: northener on July 30, 2012, 14:30:15
Been considering calling it a day with allotment. Had it for 7 years and really enjoyed it but recently its becoming more of a chore to go up there. Recently joined a gym and enjoy riding motorbike so allotment has become 3rd in line. Will make my mind up in next couple of weeks.

 :(
Thats a shame, hope you not letting this rubbish year put you off? Do you have a full plot,as halving it may suit you better,at least for a while to make sure?

I don't think this rubbish year has helped. I'm gutted reall y because ivve put a lot of time and effort in. Made raised beds and paths, got 2 sheds onto the plot plus a greenhouse. Think final straw was this years onions, kept on top of weeds only for every onion to bolt, it felt like a waste of time. Re. spliiting in half, i did a few years back but its still a big plot i've had a mate sharing a bit but he packed in when he realised weeds grow bigger than crops. Then a young couple took a bit on but they lost interest.

If your mind is made up I really don't want you to think I'm trying to dissuade you....however.....if you gave up half,or even more, and but not to a mate but to the waiting list,it wouldn't be your responsibilty anymore if they didn't keep up with it?

I see where the op is coming from. He has hobbies and can buy what he would grow and when the enjoyment has gone, then it is time to give up. Life is too darn short. do what you really want to do

What does rice burner mean?

If you really have lost heart then let someone else have a go......But quite a few of us have felt disheartened this year. At one stage I seriously considered  spraying the whole plot with weedkiller and then clearing it off!
Gyms are so expensive and looking after the plot is a much more constructive way of keeping fit.
What ever you decide enjoy!

I`m packing it up too on my plot I been there 14years. I been Sec and treasurer this past year until last Saturday when I resigned. A new committee is now in place. They voted for a new chairman who is a drunk and a new Sec who has only had a plot for 3 months also a new treasurer who has no knowledge at all. The reason why I gave up?. Too much drinking, drugs they were brought on by the old Sec. I tried to stamp it out but there are too many on the site who are into things. There is a one women member who uses her shed for doing naughty things. Its more like a cross between a drinking club, druggies paradise and  a brothel. So enough is enough its not the kind of place where you can bring small children. I have already been offered  plots on other site so as soon as I finish my harvest I`off. Before anyone say "called the police " that's a waste of time. I did that and they turned up and had a couple of cans with the boys.

Northerner I think you really need to think back and remember the good years before you decide.   This year has been so frustrating.   I dug a whole row of spuds yesterday and only got half a bucket which were edible.  They did at least break up the soil.  What is it they say? Try not to use a permanent solution to solve a temporary problem.

But if you have falled out of love with growing veg then enjoy that gym.  But even in a good growing year however hard you work at the gym there will still be no onions.

Good luck with your new plot powerspade.

@powerspade   what you say is not so uncommon but to that extent ???  :o  :o It's disgusting
On our site many of the women tut tut as the guys tend to go down there to exercise  n ot just their digging arm but the bottle swigging one too. The conversation (if you can call it that) gets louder and louder and more offensive and although most people ignore them I agree with the detractors that it is not really appropriate behviour. It's a garden, not a pub.

Which gym have you joined, Northerner? I've just joined Barnsley Premier Leisure on a £14.99/month rate, gets me into Dearnside and Metrodome (and another I think), both gym and pool, anytime.

I've no intention of letting the lottie slide mind, I have plans....on the other hand if my old interest of bikes ever gets resurrected (last one was a GSX750) then I might not get time. I have been fancying a Honda Varadero for a few years now, and the kids are growing up rapidly.

My last entry on here was edited by admin as I had called the police by a naughty name. Well I have always had a great deal of repsect for the police buy these past 5 yrs the whole of our small town in public meetings have come to the conclusion that at the moment the police are part of the problem we have. My Dad was a bobby and he would turn over in his grave if he could see how the a lot of our local Bobby's behave. Its no longer a police force that upholds the law.

Good Luck Northerner with what ever you decide.

Powerspade sorry that circumstances on the site are forcing you to give up your plot but hopefully a new plot on another site will bring a happier time for you. It is such a shame that some people do not respect the purpose of the allotment. To grow veggies and provide a place to meet socially. I must admit that I would not like to be on a site that has so much 'extra curriculla activity' on it. A social drink is fine but if it get out of hand then as you say it is not a place for families and most sites now have a family base. As far as I know we don't have this on our site (hopefully).

Don't blame you, everyone on our plot is so friendly, all remember my name, and feel embarrassed as I don't know all theirs.  It is the people that make it, have made many new friends. My Italian friend (over 80) is so generous that if I admire anything he has grown he gives it to me (have to keep my mouth shut).  It is definately chat and digging.

It is a shame but if your hearts not in it then maybe it is time to let someone else have a go?  Though this year is enough to put anyone off
