Title: Can I mulch now?
Post by: gibbonfunky on July 29, 2012, 16:53:00
Hello all

I've inherited some borders which are full of weeds. I'm thinking of digging or hoeing over and mulching now. Should I? Or should  I wait until autumn/spring?

Thanks

Gf

Hiya, welcome to a4a  ;D
The whole of our plot was weedy when we took it on. We judt dug out the nasties, covered the ground with thick cardboard and piled well rotted muck on top. It worked for us  ;D

Well..sooner you start, better your soil will become. If you just let the weeds set seeds..you just have even more potential weeds to tackle in future years.
If you mulch now and let the mulches stay on over winter months it will be eaten down by worms etc. resulting much richer soil (not necessary nutritionally but with living creatures)and what ever you choose to grow on your borders next year should have better chance to succeed.
