Why did my boiler break down on the coldest day of the day, and why did my fridge freezer break down on the hottest day of the year. Had a day yesterday binning food from the freezer although it still had ice in it, all the food was a soggy mess. Just thought the light had gone in the fridge, but then everything started melting, and we decided we needed a new fridge. The freezer seemed OK but it wasn't, then OH changed the fuse in the plug, and it was my fault as usual for not changing the light, which wouldn't have worked anyway. What with that and the baby bird that decided to come in my house to get eaten by the cats, and we had to fed it, nurse it and then take it to the allotment, where it will probably not survive, not a good day. Poor baby bird, I know you should leave them, but it was on the pavement near the road, and a boy had picked it up. It had a good sleep in a shoe box and water from a dropper, then it went mad, trying to escape. Left it outside for over an hour but no mother came, put it in a hedge at the allotment, but don't think it will survive. Next time I will shut my eyes to baby birds, may have been kinder to let the cats have it. :( :( :(
All sounds very familiar, our freezer in the garage did exactly the same thing only last week! Half the stuff semi frozen but had to chuck it as we had no idea how long it had been not working properly...... ::)
We knew it as Murphy's Law too ;D
So far this year the electric wok (hubby's favourite cooking mode :'() and the food processor have both packed up. The conditioner part of the washing machine won't flow despite repeated probing with cotton buds and the rubber seals keep leaving brown marks on the washing. Halogen cooker has lost all it's thermostatic controls so everything has to be cooked on full heat and the 30+ year old 'children' won't even attempt to use it, except for boiled eggs.

PS - Re: The little bird, how far has Sold for a Farthing got?
I live in daily dread of appliance breakdowns. All of mine - fridge/freezer, ceramic hob, extractor fan hood, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and microwave were all bought on the same day almost 13 years ago. The built-in oven, bought at the same time, is still going strong too, but I gave that to a friend when I treated myself to a pyrolitic model a few years back. I imagine them all going 'bang' one after the other over the course of a couple of weeks in the not too distant future! Sods law indeed!

Aye sds law. It's :(
There's some excellent advice by the RSPB on finding de-nested fledglings. No need to shut your eyes, just do what the guys in the know tell you to do. http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/health/babybirds.aspx (http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/health/babybirds.aspx)
Parents might not have come because they suspected a trap, or for some other reason that doesn't make sense to humans but does to birds. Oftentimes it's much more awful to intervene with wild animals than to just let it be, as I suspect you've found out from your post.
If the cats are sniffing about, you could put it somewhere high and bushy that they can't get to.
Hope the little guy survives.
Hi Ninnycrops, the book has gone to Flighty & then on to Grannyjanny.
