Hiya,
I am thinking of growing Nasturtium in my garden...but have a few questions I'd like to ask of you...
Are they all edible (as that's what I'd be predominantly be getting it for)?
I would quite like a varigated type, perhaps the "Alaska series"- the leaves look nice and interesting but is it also edible?
Also it seems that it is an annual plant...or am I wrong?
If it is an annual, does it self seed quite easily? Or is there a similar perennial type?
Thank you for your replies in advance...

I self-seeds prolifically-once you have it you'll always have it!
Seeds, flowers and leaves are all edible, slightly peppery tasting. Very susceptible to the caterpillars of cabbage whites.
I sowed a few on my allotment among the pumpkins and squashes, I can't remember the variety. I tried some leaves in a salad a couple of days ago and they were very peppery, very similar to strong watercress. I shall definitely keep using them. My daughter in Spain pickled a lot of seed pods a month ago.
Thanks for the replies!
So, I now the inevitable cheeky question...and know this is in the wrong section now...but anyone have a varigated plant or that beautiful deep purple one that I could swap some seeds from?
If so feel free to PM me and we can swap addresses, I have mostly herbs and flower seeds as I don't have an allotment/vegetable garden. Some of the seeds are below:
- Coriander seeds
- Cinammon basil seeds
- Lemon basil seeds
- Chives (garlic I think)
- Rosemary (a few left)
- Skunk cabbage
- Foxgloves (purple and white)
- Opium poppies
- Aquilegia (purple and cream)
- Forget me nots
- Grape Hyacynth
- "Red feather" morning glory Ipomoea
- "Mrs N Thompson" clematis (these were collected last week and haven't been tested...)
I know there aren't any vegetables, but there may be something that someone wants here for their garden or herb garden...
