Good morning
I am new to my allotment (first year) and have found that my home made pigeon scarer has not stopped them from dsemolishing my brassicas.
There are so many 'nets' on the market, which type would you recommends ie bird, butterfly etc. All I am after is good value for money and for it to keep the pigeons out.
Many thanks
Hi and welcome to A4a Andrea66, hope you enjoy the forum :)
What a year to have as your first on your lottie :o
Touch wood, I don't get much problem from pigeons but to keep cabbage whites off I've found debris netting put over hoops cut from blue water pipe really good and I would imagine they would protect crops from pigeons too. I bought my netting from some one on the internet, sorry can't remember the name.

Debri netting does it for me.
We buy in allotment-sized 100m rolls from LBS. The lighter weight stuff here http://www.lbsgardenwarehouse.co.uk/Protection--Anti-Bird-Netting-PRDR-T19B/ (http://www.lbsgardenwarehouse.co.uk/Protection--Anti-Bird-Netting-PRDR-T19B/) is pretty good, but you have to be careful not to snag it on whatever framework you're using, since it will tear if treated roughly.
This http://www.lbsgardenwarehouse.co.uk/Heavy-Duty-Anti-Bird-Net-PRDR-PN2/ (http://www.lbsgardenwarehouse.co.uk/Heavy-Duty-Anti-Bird-Net-PRDR-PN2/) will last a lot longer and is stronger, but the mesh size is rather larger. Personally I think it's brilliant for protecting fruit.
Many thanks to you all - I will buy some of the netting recommended and try it for my autumn crops - will let you know how I get on. Thanks again
Andrea
I bought debris netting on ebay as well, it was pretty cheap and very tough. I'm very happy I got it.
It has a line of holes in it though, at intervals, which are probably so you can tie it to scaffolding or something. Cabbage whites can get through them, so you have to tie them up with string/sew them up, unless they're on top of the central pole perhaps, which might also block them.
Mind you a pigeon certainly wouldn't fit through! ;D
I've got debris netting that is hole free.... wish I could remember the name of the supplier as it was cheap and very good quality .... I've used a strip of it to give my protection tunnel a mesh end adn a mesh strip around the bottom to allow for good airflow.... the tunnel's future use will be to get some early spuds through earlier, a sweetcorn crop earlier than normal, probably a few gigandas and some strawberries, though this year it's basically the location of a melon experiment... if I get anythign I'll be chuffed, if not then next year they'll go in the GH...

This is a decent supplier Chris, I bought the 50mtr x 3mtrs roll of green and it's very good. Hope this helps. http://www.scaffolding-direct.co.uk/ Regards, Ian
