Title: Onions growing again
Post by: Plot22 on July 16, 2012, 19:38:36
This year I suffered Downey Mildew in my over wintering onions. I took them all up cut the tops off and left about 2" on and left them to dry as best as I could in the greenhouse in the blue type of mushroom baskets. 2 weeks later they have started growing again and are producing shoots. I did leave the roots on to dry . Any thoughts any ideas. I know they will not keep but if I can get a couple of months out of them I will be happy.

Wintering onions are no good at storing.. they serve as a stop gap for early onions till the main summer crop is ready... sooo just cop and freeze.. I plant a bag of sets each autumn and start picking mine as green onions on 1st may each year and are finished by the time the main crop are ready as green onions..

My onions have started to go over, they are still quite small, this has never happened in twenty odd years of growing just goes to show what the weather has done this year.
