Title: Hydrangea potted
Post by: Carol on February 27, 2005, 17:04:54
I was given a hydrangea in a pot today which I am passing on to an old lady.  Can someone tell me how to look after one of them.  Are they specially treated as a house plant and therefore cannot be re planted outside.  Years ago, my late mother in law was given a lovely hydrangea and she had it in the house for a while then put it outside and within a week the poor thing was dead.  Are these no use outside?  Would like to know.   Thanks.

:) :)

Hydrangea are outdoor plants which don't survive in pots in my experience.

;DI'd say they were outdoor plants but if you've kept it indoors you have to harden if off gradually. Maybe thats why your mums plant died, also they like a lot of moisture so if you do transplant it keeep it well watered.

The hydrangea usually sold as a pot plant is one of the forms of H. hortensis.  They are all slightly tender in fact. They may be grown outside in milder areas. The normal procedure is to harden the plant off in Spring then, leave the pot out for a summer rest and bring in again in late Autumn. It needs a cool not too bright sunny spot in the house and as they say, lots of water and a regular feed.

Thanks Eric.  I will pass on the advice to the lady I handed it over to this morning.  Doubt if she will follow my advice tho.
