We had to close the other end of the poly today, normally it's too warm in there but today, it felt like autumn

Wednesday monsoon style thunderstorm, Thursday 6 solid hours rain.  Better today only a few brief but heavy showers.

This time last year I was praying for rain after 5 months without and now I am praying it will stop. ::)

We had a fab book when the kids were young called Bagpuss in the rain, where mice went round trying to find out how to turn off the rain.  I better so if we still have the book so I can find out how they did it.

When the sun does shine here in Kent it is so scorching it isn't comfortable to be out in it  :-\
We are still having such mixed weather - today it has been really cold, scorching hot, very wet, very windy, grey & warmish & the day has finished yet...heavy rains due yet again overnight.
The plants, wild life & us humans aren't getting any chance to acclimatise....in 10 minutes it can go from being so hot only shorts will do to needing a heavy jumper & raincoat....I can't remember the weather being so fickle ever before at this time of year

Yep!  Unbearably hot in Southern Europe.  Farmers are struggling all over Europe with this strange weather.  Something is out of whack!  :(  I guess we had enough warning about climate change, we shouldn't really be surprised, but 'global warming' sounded much more pleasant than the reality of rotting onions and flooded potatoes and everything being late.

However - we gardeners are resilient.  I am enjoying the peas and lettuces which are really thriving and 'touch wood' the potatoes so far are ok too.  This could be a good year for runnerbeans - mine are flowering, hope they get pollinated - should we shake them gently to help pollination?

Crop diversity is the answer as usual - this may be the best year for lettuce and turnips yet  ;D although these are not the most favoured crops for many of course.  We just have to learn to adapt and be prepared for all eventualities.

I am not sure shaking runner beans is enough to pollinated them.  In the garden we have bees which drill into the back of the flowers and then all the bees grab the pollen by the back door without pollinating the flower.  I have managed to do the job with a paint brush or a small feather.

I have read that if you fine mist your runner beans that it help them to set.

Not sure if it works as I have not really needed to water my allotment this year as it has flooded 3 times  :-X :'(
