I have bought some runner bean seeds. . crusader,is it too late to sow these for cropping this year,as mine (blue lake) have been decimated by slugs and snails,i don't think i will get much of a crop from them, many thanks.
just sow it!
better than no hope
Don't plant too many. A couple of wigwams in a sunny spot. Start off in pots with good compost. Just a few slug pellets when you plant out.
Go for it nothing to loose, & something to gain. Good Luck. ;D
It depends on the weather, sometimes you win. Some nights in October a bit of fleece or an old sheet thrown over can help. Last year we had an early frost, but the year before I will still picking runners in November.
Dwarf french can be better because you can through a cloche over and they are slightly quicker. Speedy are supposed to be ready in 7 weeks.
T&M claim that their dwarf runner bean Hestia can be sown late. Not cheap seeds but they are all half price in Wyevale right now.
No not to late, I put some in this time a couple of years ago and they were cropping until we had the 1st frost they done fantastic,
Think i may do it this year as i have a few seeds left over and my main crop are very poor going at the moment..
Steve..
I've just sown some hestia in deep tubs. It's the first time I've tried it but I had some and the viability will be worse next year. Keeping fingers crossed.
I sowed some years ago at the end of just when i'd just taken over my allotment. I was lucky as we had a nice autumn and I did get some beans too
