Title: droopy veg
Post by: queenbee on July 07, 2012, 20:50:49
For the first time in weeks it has been a lovely hot dry day compared to yesterday where it rained for over 14 hours. I noticed in my plot that some of my crops were wilting in the sun ie:- beetroot, turnips, cabbages and lettuce, this puzzled me but got me thinking. The veg have not had to work very hard this year as they have not really needed to send down tap roots to find moisture as its so wet on the surface I suppose it is like overwatering in the greenhouse where the roots only grow in the tap half of the pot and they are all soggy in the rest of the pot. Would appreciate your comments on my observations.

Hmmm....

I'm going to keep an eye on that. Nice observation.

Every time I come on here I learn more and more.

So are you saying if growing in bottomless pots, to water the ground around them?

Same happened with our calabrese. The outside leaves were lying on the ground. Worrying site

Lottie Lou, All I can say is that Roots need to get down deep to anchor themselves in the ground, I would water from the base of a bottomless pot. My outdoor cucumbers have hardly any roots and are hanging on for grim death which I expect any day now.

Thanks a lot, will do from now on.  They turned out okay last year, mind you I am blind as a bat so I probably missed the pots
