Title: Slugs & snails and more slugs & snails
Post by: Strawberrygirl on June 27, 2012, 20:38:25
Hubby and i have just been over to our lotty for our daily inspection. Tonight we went over a little later than usual and could not believe the amount of snails and slugs tucking into ours and everyone elses potatoes!!!!  I didn't think they ate spud leaves????  If they strip down the leaves with this affect the potatoes?

We also thought our potatoes had blight but reading other posts today it could be early blight or just caused by the awful season we've had - yellow freckly leaves.  Wondering if we should dig them up now perhaps?

Yes, I mentioned elsewhere that this is the first year I have noticed serious slug damage on potato leaves - but only Rocket. And even nettles are being attacked. And climbing beans on my daughter's allotment are reduced to stalks only, all leaves vanished. Giant pumpkin, strong little plants raised by me, also reduced to thick leafless stalks.

I pull the slimy gits off my spud leaves every night. I thought it was normal, but it seems not. I wonder why they're going for them now. Anyway, the best time to get them is just after sundown. If you're on an allotment, still them in a bag and take them away. Farrrrr away! ;D

All over my spuds last night as well - I cut them in half with my clippers!

Mine are more fussy and prefer the strawberries to the potatoes.
We had no slugs the first year on site, and very few last year, this is now year four and there are hundreds of them, small, large, black, brown, and snails all chomping away.

I've been sowing/ re-sowing and re-sowing my veg..

I row of beetroot came up...then was gone! The little blighters.

I've now resorted to chemical warfare and let lose the slug pellets!

Everything is being eaten.
