What makes the peanuts I buy for the birds not fit for human consumption?

I can't answer that for you Duke I'm sorry but I think there's a fungus on them & where I get them from it says they are safe to feed to the birds. I bet Flighty will know ;D

Did someone mention my name!  :)

As far as I know peanuts for birds bought from reputable sources are okay for human consumption, and I have known some people who do eat them although I don't.

Have a look at the section Feeding garden Birds 2. on this webpage -

If they are not suitable for human consumption they could be potentially high in Aflatoxin - this is a fungas that is very prolific on peanuts and if ingested (eaten) in large enough quantities and cause death.

And my OH says i dont listen to her when she talks about work lol
