Title: Onions going to seed?
Post by: Coastie on June 18, 2012, 09:57:51
 ???

Hi,

Some of my onions have got a swelling strting at the tip of the leaves.  Is this an indication they are going to seed and what should I do about it??

Regards

no point in cutting them off just pull them and use them as they are (they are going to seed)

I try and pinch out the seed head at the top this will leave the stalk closed at the top, if you cut it off will leave the hollow stem and rain could go down into the bulb. That's my theory, don't know if it makes any difference. Last thing, use these ones up first as the don't keep.

Thanks for the responses.

I've decided to pull the affected ones, there are only a couple, the rest seem to be doing ok.

I  have had some go to seed this year.  I pulled them up and ate them small before they  fully bolt and end up no good.  Better to have small onions than none at all. ::)
