Title: help...sweetcorn
Post by: bedrockdave on June 13, 2012, 12:38:40
hi,..can anyone help, the leaves on my sweetcorn have turned yellow and now a couple of them seem to be shriveling up.They were grown in peat pots and planted out 2 weeks ago when about 6ins tall in a well manured raised bed with pellatised chicken manure worked in  the surface.
Why oh why does gardening break your heart as well as your back ?,yesterday found that something has been eating the roots on my onion sets so a lot of them had gone

Could you tell us if these yellowing leaves are towards the bottom of your sweetcorn or towards the top (or possibly all over)     :o    ?

Cheers,     Tony,

If they were left in the pots too long they will sulk when planted out and may do so for a while. They aslso could be cold.

If planting in pots they should be in there a maximum of three weeks. They hate being riestricted which is why they sulk, if planted within three weeks they don't realise they have been in a pot and transplant very well.

If they are losing leaves  because they are cold they may regrow if the weather perks  up, if just sul.king they will grow but may sulk for some time.

If they were not hardened off before transplanting the cold will have got to them that way too.

I put cloches (made out of 2 litre bottles with the bottom chopped off) over my corn when I plant them out.  As Jeannine says, they don't get much growing time before getting planted out, and I find that the cloches help protect them from the elements if things are particularly chilly or windy.  They only need them a few days until they get establish in their new home.

Mine are always well over 3 weeks in pots with no problem but if planting out from pots do make sure they are well watered before planting as they can remain dry if dry when planted. We all have different ideas anyway.
