Title: SUPERMARKET JACKET POTATOES STRANGE TASTE.
Post by: Duke Ellington on June 11, 2012, 17:20:14
I really fancied jacket potatoes with a salad last night. So bought some from the supermarket for this purpose. the texture of the potato was watery and had a strange sweet taste in fact it was horrible. Has anyone else had this problem? What causes this?

I read that potatoes kept too cold the starch turns to sugars and they can taste sweet. The same effect as waiting for a frost for parsnips.

As they start to grow potatoes turn stored sfarch into sugar to transport to the growing shoots as starch is a very large molecule it can't be transported. Its just a natural process that should happen in spring. The seed potatoes do the same afterall they are just the same age.

Were they from Sainsburys, variety was Osprey? I had the same thing and binned them in favour of some King Edwards... roll on my first earlies.
