Title: Can I sow more AllYearRound cauli now??
Post by: antipodes on June 07, 2012, 10:32:37
Hi all. I sowed some AllYearRound cauliflower in March and I now have 5 healthy plants growing. DUnno when I will get cauliflowers though! I suspect at the end of summer?
My question is, it would be nice to have some during the autumn too - is it OK to sow some more now? WIll they have time to grow? Obviously the name is "all year round" but I have never managed to get caulis to planting out stage before so I am unsure how to deal with them.
I also have other winter greens, sprouts, winter cabbage and PSB but cauli would also be nice!

yes, but a more specifically "Winter" variety like Purple Cape would probably do better :)

ah ok. Do you know the sow-to-harvest time of AllYear Round, or at least caulis in general? How frost hardy are caulis? Our frosts usually don't start till November.

I'm sowing my purple cape now... to plant out when the spuds come out. It survived the really bad Winter last year and temps of -15c...  :)

I would not go for All Year Round cauli for a start you dont get them all year round.
If you look at the growing time of the AYR it is about 120 to 130 days from planting to harvesting thats a long growing period.
Candid Charm a very good reliable cauli 70 to 75 days from planting to harvest.
Cornel is about 80 to 90 days, so you have plenty of time for these two.
I am trying an over wintering one called redoutible which is supposed to be frost harding (depending where you live i soppose) which when planted in june/July harvest in Feb/March if i can grow it here then anyone should be able to grow it but only time will tell

Oh. In fact I was just hoping that I wouldn't have to order some more seeds!!! But I can see that it is going to be inevitable!!!  Candid Charm... OK sounds good, so if I sow now, I will get caulis in, what, October? That would be good....
Actually it's the first time I have gotten cauli to grow correctly, I am rather chuffed, as the plants are looking fantastic. I grew them in amongst a patch of lettuce, and that seems to have shaded the soil and kept the whole lot moist. Note to self...

Pleased you had success with your cauli,s the three main rules for them are to plant them deep as possible so the growing tip is as close to the soil as possible, firm them down as much as you can and keep them moist. If you allow them to dry out the curd will come but remain small.

Good look on trying Candid Charm
