Title: Onions/shallots going to seed.
Post by: rokerman1973 on June 01, 2012, 18:34:47
Hi everyone. Up the plot today and a number of my onions and the odd shallot has the seed heads on them. Do they need to come out now or are they ok to leave. Many thanks.

Take them off just as you would do with garlic scapes and stir fry them.

Pinch off the seed head, but I don't think they'll get much bigger and you need to eat them first as they don't store well.   ::)

The shallots I overwintered had seed heads on yesterday and look pretty small compared to previous years, all the ones I put in in Spring look a lot healthier. I have no explaination! As I have some banana shallots grown from seed to go in yet I might cull them early and take a chance and put the banana shallots in their place........ :-\ Its a funny year....again!
