Title: Rocket Spuds
Post by: delboy on May 28, 2012, 09:06:52
We had these last night, having had some Allians last week(all from containers in the greenhouse).

Well now I know how rubbish a new potato can be. Tasteless and slightly watery. The Allians were, on the other hand, mucho tasty.

I had always given Rocket the benefit of the doubt, even though so many others on the Board slagged them off, but not now. Apologies to all those who are muttering "I told you so".

The only use I have for it is to get some in pots in the GH... early potatoes in April but they aren't the greatest.... I find they steam OK and chip quite well, really they need to go straight from ground to pan, they lose all taste in store even if onlty a few days.... horses for courses, I'll always have a few but never a whole row (PFA, Sarpo Mira and Yetholm Gypsy get that)

We changed from rocket to Lady Chrystl and vanessa for the poly this year, both brilliant and the vanessa are quite a good size now, just had our first meal from them  ;D

I am growing Belle de Fontenay and the first few earlies have had excellent flavour and a good creamy texture. I think I will stick to them if I can get them, although I had a great new spud last year called ( I think) AnoƩ. A new type. They were brilliant but couldn't find them this year...

Blue Moon from Jarvik Potatoes are my all time faves - they were a "trial". Last year we picked up Ingrid at the Potato Day in Hants and they were really tasty and a good yield. No surprise, neither of these types were available this time round.
