Title: parsnips
Post by: Karen Atkinson on May 27, 2012, 09:48:56
Is it too late to sow parsnips. The ones I sowed a month ago havent germinated. Admittedly it was old seed

I would definitely sow but maybe soak for a few hours first

Parsnip seeds go off quicker than most.  If you allow one to self seed there is 110%   ;D germination in the first year and you will get them all over the place.

Get some fresh seed.  Do not bury them too deep.  Nature does not bury them at all.

A month ago it may have been too cold, and the seed rots easily. I only put mine in a few days ago. It takes a while to germinate, and doesn't like drying out durng the germination period. I watered mine in well, and put planks over the top to keep the soil from drying out until it comes up. Clear plastic would have been better, if I had any.
