Our association want to buy a strimmer use on the allotments, can anyone recommend one? It will have to be either re-chargeable or petrol and will need to be able to cope with quite overgrown areas.
Avoid ryobi! Useless things!
Hello Betty,
I have a Stihl Combi that i use to trim the Hedges and I also have a strimmer attachment.
They are expensive but are the best you can buy.
Regards,
Martin.
Last year we bought a Stihl C45. It's brilliant, everyone loves it and it just goes on and on. It was so good, we bought a second one soon after. They are both in constant use.
But wouldn't you know it, the C45 is now discontinued!! So you have a choice between the C40 and the C50. The C40 & C45 are actually the same machine, but the C45 has Ergostart, which is a fairly foolproof starting mechanism and even the ladies can start it every time. The C50 also has Ergostart, which is why we have just bought one for ourselves; it's a tad heavier - and a tad dearer - but it's a beautiful machine.
Go to a specialist, though. Several years back we got a couple of strimmers from Argos and we took them back so many times they ended up discontinuing the range! If a lot of people are going to use them, go for quality. (And if you can't afford it, smile sweetly at your local Councillors and see if they can get something from the Ward Budget for you.)
Hi
I have used a Stihl Brushcutter for the last 3 years,it goes on and on and on
It has a 3 legged blade and the usual strimmer head
i also bought a slasher blade for some really rough work including brambles and blackthorn bushes
The model is the FS 310, expensive, but worth it
I got my Stihl secondhand. Scruffy and well-used, but utterly reliable and efficient. It was our 5th strimmer, I'm embarrassed to say. One never worked, one was a Ryobi which worked well for a couple of years then packed up, one was a Bosch that was so useless that we gave it away, and the final one was some own brand horror bought in France that lasted less than a season.
Stihl. The only word you need to know in strimmers.
Thanks for the replies, looks like it will be a Stihl for us!

Just saw this on Amazon Betty
Oops - got my codes wrong! It's FS50 - not C50 like I said. Current list price is just over £200, but we got a better deal than that. (Well, we did buy 2 strimmers and 2 Hayter mowers from him in the space of 18 months!)
I just bought one for our allotment. Stilh is the best Ours cost £400.00
Or perhaps you could hire one for a busy weekend to give it a try before buying?
