Whilst weeding today I dug up a baby tree, it had red leaves and on the root what looked like an acorn, but not quite, maybe a nut. Then I got another one, I planted both in a pot and will wait and see. Will feel a bit silly if it is an oak tree, but the leaves were red, and on the allotment next to me is a lovely red leaved tree, so maybe it was a nut from there, or the squirrels are having a laugh. Anyway its in a pot, so maybe I will have a lovely red leaved tree.
What, squirrels running amuk with a Halfords rattle can of Ferrari red ! ? ! ? :o
Cheers, Tony.
Young leaves on oak seedlings are often red. That is the most likely species. Oaks make good bonsai by the way.
Thanks for that, sure it is an oak, but was surprised the leaves are red. Will keep it in a pot as don't want an oak tree on the allotment but might try a bonsai. Will post a photo later of the tree I hoped it was and the sapling.
