Title: Comfrey
Post by: Karen Atkinson on May 16, 2012, 17:00:04
Apart from making fertiliser, is there anything else I can do with comfrey leaves? Just harvested a huge bunch today.

Compost them. You get the goodness just the same.

I hang a net bag full in a water butt and I lay the leaves around potatoes, beans fruit.

line the potato trenches before planting
Time for my comfrey story. 25 years ago I lined a bean trench with leaves and must have put a bit of root in there. Every year, still, some comfrey pops up in that place....

Comfrey can occasionally grow from just the leaves, I have had this happen.

You can either leave the leaves a few days before placing in your trench, or if they do start growing, just pull them out before they have a chance to get established.

I let it flower as the bees love it, then cut right back and add to the compost heap. I do that three or four times a year.

I use them for mulching up my potatoes and strawberries.  They are supposed to improve the taste of potatoes though I cannot say I have noticed any difference.
