Title: Greek Gigante Beans
Post by: Pescador on May 15, 2012, 16:19:08
Bought some Gigante Beans while on holiday in Greece last week, (trying to ease their financial crisis single-handed)
They look like very large white runner bean seeds.
Anyone grown them?
I've started to chitt some on damp paper in the kitchen, and plan to pot-on and plant out if the weather eber warms up?
Any hints anybody? (Apart from getting an allotment in Greece and moving there full-time?)

Yeah I grow them... get them in in 3" pots indoors/thermostatic propagator now, then up into somethign a bit bigger adn harden off properly.... big plants, massive beans and will need de-blossoming come early -mid August to maximise the crop that they've got... they are delicious though....

I have grown them many tiimes in fact had some shipped over from Greece this year as many |o found where not the right size. There are a lot os so called Gigantes out there which are wrong. I have 20 plants coming on well now, all the 20 seeds I put to germiante did so.

They are runner beans and willcross with other runners.

I grew them in the Uk, started early and put out good sized plants, you should be fine as long as you have a decent season.

Hadem as a starter in Greece,  we are still using up the crop from a couple of years ago.  Thanks for the reminder that I need to grow some this year.

Cheers,    Tony.

Thanks Chriscross and Jeanine.
I just hope the weather improves, otherwise they're not going to like it too much

They're now just starting to chitt, so I potted them up this morning. Think they might not like the unheated greenhouse, just have to wait and see.
