Post by: smudger28 on May 08, 2012, 17:59:55
Hi Guys

What is this lovely large Aquiligia my wife and I spotted when we were looking around one of the National Trust Gardens?

I think it could be a poppy of sorts ;)  I have ordered some Aquilegia glandulosa seeds as they look fab too!

I think these are the closest poppy I can find so far is Lilac Papaver somniferum.

ask in the national trust shop/plant sales if they hadn't one for sale they might have been able to give you the name

I think they could be Tulips growing through the Aquilegias.  I can certainly see Tulip leaves...

Are tulip stems usually green and thicker than those pictured?

It's hard to tell from the photo but I think that the centres certainly look more like Tulips than Poppies or Aquis and some of the stems look thicker than others...

I agree, looks like tulips growing through the aquilegia foliage....you can see the much smaller still closed aquilegia flowers if you blow the pic up a bit...

It's a mystery.

Perhaps if someone can find tuilps like the blooms in the photo we you will have cracked it.  ;)
