Title: Just a place to chat..so how are things going with you
Post by: Jeannine on May 07, 2012, 20:27:46
You know we used to have a post like this in the Trixie days when we lots of us joined in with ..well..just chat.

It was fun adn all sorts of stuff showed up in the thread.

Maybe we can do it again.

So if I start.

It is noon and I am still in my jammies, trying to figure out what dinner will be tonight, ideas always welcome.

We are going to the lottie shortly and I plan to plant out my tomatoes under wall of waters and some in huge pots in the greenhouse,

I have a yen to go on a mini holiday, thinking of a short Alaskan cruise but probably won't.

My hair is starting to fall out, it is very long and I am wondering if I had it cut short if it might help.

We just had a very tall Fedex delivery man at the door, bronzed, tall and in very short shorts  with his shirt opened up to the waist.. d**n it, John went to the door.Sometimes life sucks!!

We have NO rain forecast for two weeks,, muct be a record!!

Not a vrey interesting start but lets give it a try..??

Jeanine I reckon you will have to order some gardening treats  mail order and make sure you get to the door quicker next time  ;)
Nice idea for a thread,I'll join in with my ramblings! Ive not been on here much of late, laptop been in hospital for a while and now on a new one. I start this week with my new business,am working as a grow your own tutor within schools, and as of last week have full time hours spread between three schools. I'm very excited and chuffed having made a career change in my forties. That allotment has a lot to answer for as I used to work away on the road with bands until we got our beloved plot ( sorry for those who have heard all this before) and life just couldnt be better at the mo. Hubbie too is now gardening full time and also happy!
who is going next?

OK, I shall go next!

Hi Jeannine, glad everything sounds like it is working out for you, as Elvis says order more stuff!

Elvis,I too have started a new business, a cookery school, bit scary, but now the girls don't require me quite so much, the time is right!
Trying to run it alongside my catering business has been stressful, but I shall get there in the end, and shall have an empire!!! :-)  (Yeah right!)

Went up to check on my waterlogged seedlings this morn, and some &*&^%$%" mouse has pinched all my germinating sweetcorn, now I love nature n all, but this is just too much! 50 sweetcorn eaten, so not a happy camper. >:(

Hoping the weather will improve a little today so I can squelch up on my plot and at least get to grips with my weedy greenhouse, my tomatoes are still here at home, unheard of for this time for me, they are usually in, the rain is quite depressing, I know we need it n all, but stop already, enoughs enough!

Looking into getting a couple of chickens for the back garden, which is very exciting, I have always had a hankering for chickens, but am thinking my back garden is too small, and I would hate to be cruel and have them in too small a space, so research is required, and thinking along the lines of a tractor arc, now just wondering if I have the capability to build one! ;)

I too am in my jammies, dinner tonight, left over lamb, so got to be a curry! ;D

Need to go grocery shopping, but the greenhouse beckons, decisions decisions  ;)

Time to get dressed and check my sweetcorn seed stock , ruddy critters!

Its been a fairly nice sunny day here, got the washing dry. I have to decant the garlic wash into bottles to stop the smell in the shed  :-X Changed all the dog beds and washed them :)

Sally has had her bath, nice and shiny and NO hair falling out......for a few days at least. Its the first in 3 months, the dog groomer had his knee done and is just back at work.

Yesterday I made a booboo, I have heart meds, I forgot I took them and took them again :-\......so today I have been tired and done more than I should have done. No matter I do feel better now. Theres no excuse either, I have Mon to Sun tablet dispenser......must learn to read the day....but then it helps to know what day it actually is ;D

Thanks for starting this off again Jeannine, I hope everyone has a good day! ;D

Not going to moan, just had a talk with the vicar about the funeral, tomorrow.
Then we got all the old albums out and had a right good laugh/cry. The seventies, me and my Brian May perm, Ray thin as a stick.
Grandad's 100th birthday with him sitting there with a great big pipe, laughing like a drain.
Dad's old photos of when he was in the army in India, his medals and war time ration books, old insurance policies from the year dot.
All the holidays we all went on, nothing much but a beach, some paper aeroplanes, butties, crisps and a drink. Does you good to laugh/ cry. Absolutely brilliant  ;D

Wishing you well tomorrow Manics.

Spent Sunday and Monday re-decorating the dining area with hubby and for the first time in nearly 35 years, no divorce threats even when he up-ended the roller tray, how white paint travels  ::). Only the kitchen left to do and then the whole house will be white. Archived so many bits and bobs, gifts and memories to the loft, really ought to have put labels on them so the children realised why we kept them.

Daughter is coming home from Egypt on Thursday for a two month stay, so getting very excited about an odd girly shopping trip or two and another basin full of Dirty Dancing and Bridgette Jones and the hugs we've missed.

Oh goodee, chatterers ..

Elvis the job sounds smashing good luck with it. My Fedex man is usually a very good looking yound woman in shorts which is why I think John gets to the door before me!!

Doris, yours too, a cookery school, Wow. Chickens,,oh I envy you, there has been soem talk about having a community chicken project here, I have my catalogue os chicken breeds all ready but so far nothing. I loved my Buff Orpingtons when we lived in Camada before but we had acreage then.

Here nothing very exciting going on, I goty all my tomato plants into Global Buckets, self waterering  containers yesterday and risked some out on the plot too. bet we get a frost now, it is like hanging your washing out, bound to rain!!

Does anyone have any good ideas for dinner, I get so sick on trying to think things up and John says..anything is good grhh.   Mmm I coiuld fix him.

Liver with cabbage and sweet poatoes, followed by Tapioca...yep that wouild do it, he may not be so keen to say anything another time..I am so bad!!

I have a new lottie neighbour, he and his wife don't seem to speak much English, they constantly chatter away non stop and very loud and fast in fact the conversation really is shouting(in triple time). I don't know what language it is  I will have to find it a name as I haev't been able to converse with them yet. She is clearly the boss, she does get very nagry with him although the voice doesn't get any louder or faster, well I guess it couldn't as they talk in top gear as it is, but she waved her arms about which can look quite threatening when she has a trowel in it. He seems to try to be invisible at such times and reatreats into the Porta Pottie.Minmd you she waves her arms even more when he gets back.

When I was in the UK I posted a topic on nick names of lottie folks, I think I will do that again here. I think Lambchop and Cleaver would be good names for these two, he seems so meek and she is so fiery.

She wears a skirt always and when she bends over she has longish under draws with stockings fastened just above her knees. There is a good view from the rear. He is in flood pants, about 6 inches too short.  Maybe   Knickers and  Flood woulkd be better!! I wonder what they will wear when it gets hot

There is a real ditzsy lady, all over a dither all the time but very kind and sweet , high sqeaky voice. she reminds me of a Little Bird.

Manics, i hope you funeral was not too hard. It was lovely to hear you found so much joy in your photographs. I still have an old insurance policy, I never cashed it in, it was too good to keep, back from the days when the premioum was 1 penny.

Star you be careful with those meds, you need a talking medicine box..

Duke, I wonder which priority won..bet the ironing came last!!

Ninny enjoy your daughter, some real Mumsy stuff.Buy her new jammies and make her hot chocolate when she is in them!!

Well off to the plot..

Life is just mental at the moment. I'm trying to arrange our next grant for bigger solar panels. Feel like I'm drowning in paperwork, between the probate and all of that. We're in the middle of our 3 plant sale weekends, all at different venues so everything has to be packed up today, loaded in a van, taken to the next one and unpacked. Tomorrow the rest will be delivered and has to be unpacked. At least the weather is supposed to be better this weekend. Some of our profits are going to the cubs and scouts so I hope we make loads  ;D

Knickers and flood thats hilarious! sometimes you do get a view you wearnt expecting!

My jobs gone to the dogs after new boss used my signature without my permission so spending more time at home at the moment.

Its lovely that the trees have a summer coat of lush green leaves at the moment and fab to watch those little seedlings grow into fat healthy looking plants.

Im looking forward to the first tomato and sitting out reading a book with the sun warm on my skin.

I'v Just come back from a very muddy walk at the shore with my collie Jake, washings out and getting rained on and i think i might tackle the mountain of sewing thats been building up whislt watching a bit of tele with a nice cuppa.

happy friday x sunloving

I too am glad you had a laugh over your old photos, Manics. Your Grandad with his pipe made me think of my Great Uncle Charlie, a great gardener who always wore a cap and had several tan/white spaniels over the years, they were all called Prince. As a nipper I never realised that they were different dogs, one died and he just got another the same! The memory I have of Uncle Charlie most of all was the smell of his pipe tobacco, if I caught a whiff of it now it would take me straight back to Bosham, Hants circa 1967...

Smells are funny. I close my eyes when I smell violets and would swear my um was standing right next to me.

Good luck Manics, it does sound a bit daunting, I hate those things these days, yet 10 years ago I would consider iot a great challenge which I loved.. getting older..

Does anyone out there have any siggestions for good books..

Finally got out into the garden for a good look around. The apple tree is in full bloom, wonderful smell, I have lily of the valley flowering, along with the bluebells and dicentra. The sky is BLUE and the sun is shining although the wind is chilly. Love it . What sort of books are you in to, Jeannine?

Such a lovely thread. We all have our gripes/hard-to-bear-moments in life...but we all seem to have sunshine in our lives to make the clouds seem more bearable. Thanks for starting this thread Jeannine.

For me, it's been a demoralising week at work. I'm a newly qualified teacher, who passed through training as an 'outstanding' student teacher (even noted in an Ofsted observation). Now, I am merely 'satisfactory' (which these days means 'failing'). In this weeks observation I got criticised for 'working harder than the kids' even though they were all on task and enthused (and who gets criticised for working TOO HARD!). Apparently, I am 'too loud and enthusiastic'.

It hurt hard. My kids knock on the door to come in each morning. Their parents have told me how eager they are to get back to school even during the holidays. We have laughs, sooooo much fun and I can show the massive progress they are making ('levels' don't lie - especially when moderated!). But one person's judgement (who has a different - very quiet and calm - teaching style) can d**n you. I expect enthusiasm and energy from my children, therefore I lead by example. It works for us. But not for my 'judge'. I'm not always 'loud' ...but during the few minutes she observed, I was 'selling' some tricky maths word problems to a bunch of Y1's....you've got to drum up interest somehow!

On the bright side....no 'judges' in today. I let my 5 and 6 year olds have a "Funday-Friday". I assessed their maths through playing games, they chose to sew, craft with clay and tend to our home-grown plants (even the runner bean we kept in the dark cupboard and the poor bean we fed only with tomato sauce to see how it fared! - a home-grown science experiment!). And....for once....I left before 5 (I get in at 8am and work through break and lunch, so not strictly slacking). Tomorrow I shall be having a rare 'day off' and not touching the marking/assessment/planning etc.

I have (hopefully) sunshine to enjoy, weeds to destroy, protection cages to build and melons and sweetcorn to sow. Tomorrow I shall be an 'outstanding' newly qualified allotmenteer. I shall hoe with all the same enthusiasm I give to my teaching, I shall 'challenge' my runner beans to cope with open ground (I have eased their 'transition' by hardening off), I will 'support' my peas to allow them to 'thrive', I will 'protect my vulnerable' (brassicas) and ensure they 'make progress' without being bullied by predators. (A4A teachers/ex-teachers will understand the references!). But, in short, I will do exactly as I do at work, hopefully with the same reward from my crops (children)! And I will enjoy it all the more because the long-lost sun will shine and I know on Monday morning I'll have 26 happy, enthused children to greet me and enjoy a 'judge-free' week of fun-filled learning!

Sorry to hear that Gerbera...
I was a student trainer for Leicester School of Education for several years... I wouldn't believe an Ofsted evaluation if they said I was still breathing...  :-X

gerbera I loved reading your post.
Good teachers can't be graded on forms with little tick boxes.
You folk breathe education and don't let the people who CAN'T teach tell you otherwise.
I learn't so much from passsionate people !

Gerbera, as a retired teacher, I can almost taste your love for the job and the children you teach.  They are the best judge of how well you're doing, and I think my grand-daughter would love being in your class!  We can probably all remember that special teacher who inspired us -mine was a Mr. Nicholson, whom I absolutely loved.  He used to read "the Secret Garden" to us on Friday afternoons.  Not only did he enthuse me about reading, he also helped nurture a fascination for gardening which has grown with me over the years.  You are that special teacher to the children who can't wait to come back every Monday morning, and don't you forget it!

Thank you for all your kind words...you made me cry a little...but for all the good reasons. If anyone looked in on my class for a day or two, rather than a cold view on a half hour, they would see something 'good' at least.

I love my job, the children I work with and hold by my ethos. I'll just have to cope with the occasional kicking or learn how to 'play the game'. If my judge had been there to deliver the verdict, I'd have shown her just what progress my approach had achieved. I won't become a 'flat-pack' teacher.....I benefited from too many off-beat, inspiring teachers during my education to deny my children the same!  8)

Enjoy the sunshine tomorrow xxxx

Gerbera I worked in a school for years in the UK and one thing for sure I found out was that being observed was a useless thing, teachers got all anxious about it, the observer was always looking at things from their angle, and generally looking for negatives and lets me honest there are many good ways to teach. Put it down to a snit of the job and keep your refereshing style. If the parents are happy, the kids are learning and you like going to your job..you havr all you need.

You do have to learn to play the game sadly, give 'em what they want to see then do yoiur magic after they have gone.

Remember when you will get to observe eventually, you can bring your experiences  to your mind then!!

O h goodee a Rosebud.. hope you are felling much better .

Sharing a tale..and don;t laugh..

I was working in the greenhouse a couple of days ago , bending low with my rear end to the door I heard a click,I turned round and a man was taking a photograph of me, now who the he** would want a photograph of a 70 year womans  overweight  backside. I was annoyed an insisted he erase it,

He is a creepy fella, a bit odd and he follows me around a lot.

I have tried to figure out what he was going to do with it..share it, keep it..but for what purpose.

They say that a good ass is hard to find, but I don't want mine to find itself on You Tube.

Any ideas how I can stop him following me around.

That is annoying if not a little worrying. Can you tell him in no uncertain terms that his presence makes you feel uncomfortable, and that you will be forced to report him for harassment and stalking if he continues?

I know it seems a tad harsh, but if this makes you feel vunerable and uncomfortable then something needs to be done. Good luck  ;)
