Has anyone eaten the flower heads of Curly Kale? My Kale is coming to an end and going to seed so, to extend the harvesting a bit longer today I started cutting off the flower heads. It struck me that they are very similar in appearance to sprouting brocolli (which I love)so I have saved some to cook. Has anyone else done this?
I have! I guess I am one of the "eat it all" brigade. I cut it before the flowers opened and very tasty it was too.
I have even done it with brussel plants.
Thanks Infradig; it's now on tomorrow's menu!
I read somewhere very recently that the flower heads were fine to eat... I guess that's before they actually open.
I might pick some and not tell Mrs R what it is... she dislikes kale (having not tried mine at all!) but I might be able to get her to try the flower stalks. ::)
"Have you got any baby spinach?".......Give us a chance!!
I've also discovered over the last three years the delights of eating the flower sprouts of both kale and sprouts. YOu can catch the lower less successful sprouts as they start to go to seed, and our kale certainly produces little shoots that then flower all along the main stalk. Cook for very little time.
Does anyone else sprinkle a little vinegar over dark greens before eating? It is a family tradition for several generations. There are some who put vinegar on chips (not me!) and others who put it on all dark greens - savoy cabbage, brussel tops, spinach, kale, sprouting broc, etc. Try it!
Thanks for all the feedback folks. Just finished a meal with the kale. We had a pastry-less quiche with smoked fish, cottage cheese, tomato and brocolli. WE boiled the Kale florets and they were very acceptable. Some of the stalks were tough. Tried Peanut's idea; had some with a little basamic and it works okay but not sure if I would do that regularly.
I definitely will cut off all the Kale florets for future consumption; not as good as sprouting brocolli but a good substitute!
