Has anyone tried growing horse raddish?
I've been told that it keeps slugs off your spuds, but am worried about it spreading like wild fire. Would it have the same affect in a pot next to the spuds or does it have to be in the ground.
It would be great to be able to make your own sauce for Sunday lunch though!
I grow it in a big tub. If the roots get out though the holes in the bottom it will start to grow again.
I grate a bit up in bought tartare sauce as there is only me who likes it.
If you put it in the ground next to your spuds- well just don't!!! :o :o
Sorry to highjack this post but when do you harvest your horseradish please? I have done it in autumn and although it made my eyes water to grate it (even in the food processor) it really doesnt taste very strong (I put it into vinegar a la River Cottage). Have I got a bland strain or am I doing something wrong?
thanks
Yes. Watching and believing river cottage. Get a recipe of the net http://www.herbexpert.co.uk/growinghorseradish.html (http://www.herbexpert.co.uk/growinghorseradish.html)
I've no idea why yours isn't a strong taste. Mine was just someon my old plot- for 17 years I never used it so when I moved plots I put some in a big tub. I usually forget to harvest it when we are having beef :-[
I've never used vinegar-just grate a bit up and put in into the tartare sauce.
Fresh it will blow your sinuses out through your toenails, but if pickled it does lose its heat.... will have a go at that recipe though... thanks ACE...

YES...AND..raise the tub on bricks, as it will escape..as nice as horseradish is..it is total THUG. Once it escapes into ground..you'll never get rid of it..it spreads everywhere!
I put it in the open ground, and while I did get rid of it, it spread about six feet in a year. I have a tub, I just need to get myself organised. They've got some nice-looking roots at Tesco's.
Thanks for the advice! I was honestly going to put it in with the spuds.
I'm so glad I didn't. A tub it is then.
Nobody's said if it keeps the slugs off. Is this a myth?
Yes be wary. I planted it on my allotment 15 years ago. Realised my error two years later and tried to dig it all out. Still digging bits of it out now!

No idea but we are not going to try it!
