Title: mushroom growing kit - a question
Post by: Hazelb on April 29, 2012, 11:34:58
I bought one of the Aldi specials mushroom growing kit a few months back...

I normally like some of the Aldi ( usually gardenline) stuff, but this was rubbish.... Only 6 mushrooms to date.  >:(

It got me thinking, if i were to throw out the mushroom compost in to a patch n my garden/allotment that was ideal for mushrooms, would it carry on growing and multiplying giving me a better crop next year?

Is that kit for the 'usual' shop bought type 'button' mushrooms?
They are actually not the easiest type to grow though most common ones in shops and in kit form.. ::) They need quite specific growing condition to crop well.
If you were to chuck the mushroom compost into outside..it is possible that when the conditions become favourable to the surviving myzelium..and if lucky you might get odd mushroom popping up. They are unlikely to survive more than this year.

ah well it was a longshot.

I think I'll just use the spent kit as a mulch..and see if anything comes up  ;D.

So is there actually an easy way to grow mushrooms? We did one of these kits a few years ago and it was rubbish. Same results as Hazel. Would be nice to have some mushrooms.

I grew one last year, but I bought it on special offer and just got enough mushrooms to cover its costs.... just.... have a long-term plan to build a mushroom area on one of the sheds and see if I can do it properly, but until then..... I'm not really fond enough of most o the wild mushrooms to bother....

It's difficult because i don't really like mushroms much at all, well sometimes i do but it's one of those ones  - take it or leave it. Mrs  K loves her mushrooms, so i'd like to earn brownie points in a fairly straightforward manner. I can beat my head against a brick wall attempting mushies or get it hammered with the rolling pin. Same result.  ::)
