Title: Good king Henry. Any problems when used as veg perennial?
Post by: strawberry1 on April 25, 2012, 16:10:10
I am looking at ways of making the allotment beds easier for the future and GKH looks to be a good alternative to some greens. Are there any problems with it? Does it get caterpillars etc Is it an easy herb/veg? I have 4 x 8 feet raised beds. It sounds too good to be true

Have you tried it?  It is passable if you pick the leaves young.  Not too bad for a quick nibble off the plant.  Not exactly top of the flavour tops for me though better than Fat Hen.

Very deep rooting once established... would be hell to get out of a raised bed if it was happy... can also self seed as a nuisance..  :-X

Usable as a green very early in the year, but outperformed on taste and texture by most other greens during the main growing season. It doesn't need favoured conditions such as a raised bed - it will do fine in any odd corner of rough ground as long as it is not too dry. Once established, it will self seed to form a colony, but is not hard to control.
Very easy to grow, and I've had no serious problems with any pestilence. A useful weed.

Thank you very much. That made my mind up for me and I am not sowing it. I think I had an impulsive moment
