The children want to groe their own pumpkins this year. Is there a beginners guide on how and what to do?

Not really they germinate easily if kept warm in the house/propagator...
don't put them out until after the frosts... keep well fed and watered... like children really!  ;D

I'd recommend the varieties Big Max, Hundredweight and Becky F1.... The first two will produce pretty good "big" pump[kins, the third is a bit smaller but you will get four or five of them about head sized without any real effort once it's got a home on a mound of poo in early June or late May... Don't bother with Atlantic Giant until you've got used to the smaller ones, yes they get big but they aren't easy to grow and get almost every problem a cucurbit can.....

Do grow a\ nice eating pumpkin too, they are not just for carving!!! If you don't have too much space, grow baby varieties like Hooligan that give smaller pumpkins with sweet flavour.
