Hi
I have a row of leeks just thiner than a pencil am i able to move them?
Is it safe???
Cam
mine haven't even popped up yet!
Mine went in around september last year
Aah! Were they outside or in a greenhouse?
Sure... they are almost indestructible... are you going to cover them against that horrible moth? :-\
there in a bed in garden would like to plant them up with better spacing
That's good. Mine are nowhere near pencil more like sewing thread!
Absolutely safe. Mine will be going in at the weekend, weather perm,

Mine too - I'm wondering if they'll ever grow up to be a pencil - I don't think they've put on any growth in the last 6 weeks.

If they've been on same compost for 6 weeks..it could be that they are running out of food. Try a 'gentle' nitrogen feed and they soon start bulking up... ;)

Marlin..you leeks look just fine.. ;D If you think how long they still have to grow for being ready for harvest, for earliest late summer onwards..its still loooong way ahead.

Emphasis on ALMOST i think here. The moth will get them given half a chance. Other than that they will put up with most things a gardener can throw at them.
I have sown mine this year in a half seed tray and plan to prick them out into modules or pots to grow on before planting out. Dont like having to disentangle them when they grow together in a pot.
I just bought my leeks seeds yesterday: Musselburgh and Autumn Giant.
Am I too late? If I sow tonight, do still have time?
I also saw a woman sowing her leek seeds straight in the ground. Is that done often? If so, should I do it as well since I am running late with sowing?
I have only grown leeks once (an old fellah gave me some plants in a tray).
Déja vu, but - pencil nonsense!
This is how mine go in. Best in before end July.
Put mine out last week.
They look good Tim. Do you top & tail yours before planting?
I only top if they flop!
I only tail if they won't easily slip into the hole.
Thank you Tim ;D.

Yes..you are fine. You can sow leek almost any time of the year..and if they don't manage to grow very big..you just eat them as 'baby leeks'.. ;) ;D
yep Tim that's the size do u just pop into a hole and earth up??
No earthing needed Cam. Just dib a big hole, fill it with water & then just drop in your leek. You might need to wriggle it about to get the roots in. The soil gradually falls around the plant ;D.
cool bananas clearing the bed sunday rain or shine and then i can pop them in with help from assistant gardener Harriet who is loving getting her hands into the soil
Perfect age to get little ones interested, will she have her own little veg or flower bed?
Have you seen the Joseph Bentley range of apprentice tools. The are lovely.
she got some tools for her birthday yes i am going to get her set up with a tomato plant :) Got a nice bright tomato planter bag :) She's growing the seed in the front room at the moment, every morning she sprays them with water and every night she says night night to them :)
How lovely ;D.
Yep she is :) and she knows it 2
We went for lunch today i bought her a kiddies toasted sandwich and i had a ham and cheese panini she pushed hers away saying no pulled my plate over and before i could do anything had lifted up 1/2 and started chomping down!!
so i had her sandwich :)
I think leeks are my favorite I grow 4 types just because I love them,Ive made a leek bed this yr I started putting in my Bulgarian Giant ,will put the rest in as they get to a decent size ,Ive got them growing in almost pure rotted manure ,and will feed the liquid sheep's manure once a week, think Ive lived in the N E to long and got the bug there ;D
Earthing up - agree - no need!
My dibber is 12" long & I use most of it. Best with moist soil. If powdery, scuff off the loose stuff first so that it doesn't fall into the hole.
Me - I dribble water in afterwards - this puts a little soil onto the roots.
Bentley tools - yes, great. The' apprentice' tools are just right for the oldies!!
