BAK reminds me that it's that time of year when we compare the rents on out allotments.
So that we can compare the rents what would be really helpful is if you could say what the all-inclusive price of a ten pole plot on your site would be, including any water rates and admin charges, but excluding any optional association membership charges.
If you don't know the price of a ten pole plot then just say how much you pay and the size of your plot.
Appreciate it, thanks.
my allotment size is 2700 sq feet, the rent last year was £50, this year its £60
but no letter from the council about the increas in this years rent
WILL IT BE £70 NEXT YEAR ???
A 1/2 plot measuring 140 square metres. 31p fer sqm if I lived 100yds away.....but doubled now. I now live 'out of area' so pay double, until I live over the road. £84 per year I think..
£40 for a Standard plot (201 = 400 sq yds)
increasing to
£75 in October this year.
It's half price for over 60s
I pay £50 for two ½ plots each measuring 108 sqm, my plots are in Croydon just outside London
My plot is 400 square metres at a cost of £30.00 a year but no water
In Guildford I pay £52 per year for 10 poles
This is broken down as follows:
Rent £2.75/pole OAPs go 50% discount on this for the first 10 poles (or 8 poles on some sites)
Water £2.10/pole
Insurance, NSALG, Admin £3.50 per person
We only have two 10 pole plots (250 sq metres) left at Sunningdale in Berks.
The average size of plot is just under 5 poles (125 sq. metres).
No rent increase this year.
The cost of a 10 pole plot is £28 ... the cost of a 5 pole plot £14.
The cost per pole is therefore £2.80. It includes water.
There are no concessions.
£27.00 for a 10-pole plot, plus £5.00 surcharge for NSALG & RHS affiliation and insurance, regardless of size of plot. Total therefore £32.00. No reductions.
Independent, non-Council site. Car park, composting toilet, water on or near every plot, mowers, strimmers & rotavators available for use, regular free supplies of manure, pallets & bark chippings.
Our rent to our landlords goes up by the rate of inflation each year, so we try to keep in step. A slight increase this year, but none last.
Hi all i have a half plot [still quite big ] and pay £26.00 per year with water .Not bad me thinks no increase on last year
In London Borough of Merton it is £101 for 10 rods plus £9.50 for water, so £110.50 - sounds like they are in for a windfall as a result of the hose pipe ban. New plot holders now only get five rod plots.
My site is going self administered, although the sites across the borough are becoming a mixture of self administered and council run.
OC
Mine is 7 metres wide by 40 metres long Approximately and I pay £18 including water it is on a fenced off site and gated we are provided with a skip and have recently had our paths (not on our allotment)tarmaced so a very neat and tidy site roughly 25-30 plots nice neighbours good value!!!
X Chas
Ours is 18' x 56' & £7.50 inc water. Very happy there but just wish it was bigger, don't we all ;D. Halp price as we are OAPs ;D.
our plot that we give up on monday is 16ft x 80ft £20.00 per year including water
not sure of measurements of new plot but same price including water.
We pay £20 for 90m2: about 3.5 poles?
I have an extra piece so difficult to work out. But do you have my rate for last year since it is the same no increase pro rata.
£31 rent for 10 pole plus some association charges, ground fee and nat soc member takes it to £37. OAPs ge the rent bit at 50%.
From the CBC website:
In 2012/3 the rent is £14.40 per 100 square yards. Concessionary rates are available for 60+, students in f/t education and those in receipt of income related benefits (proof of eligibility is required)
Includes water and a good skip service.
Most of the tenants pay half price.
£20 for approx 200 sq yards. (they vary a bit!!) and £10 for a half-plot. No concessions. Includes water, Fedaga membership and insurance and occasional skips. No toilets.
Not sure of the size but I pay £20 and that seems to be the same whatever the size as I gave up half my plot last year and it's still the same rent! No water, nothing included , except some hedge-cutting which only gets done if you make a fuss!
Our site charge £24 per full plot and £13 for 1/2 plots. OAPs get 45% discount (previously 50%), but this will probably get phased out over the next few years as it affects around a third of our total plots. Rent includes 1x skip early spring for allotment generated waste only, and water supply (with a tap every for every 8 plots or so). Our rent was the same last year and at the moment will be the same when rents are due in October. As allotment supervisor I sit on our council committee and argue against any rent increases providing we are within budget as there is no justification. Our rents are not used as a piggybank for the councils overspend elsewhere. (We are a self managed site but other sites that are council run in our area are paying double).
Based in Hemel Hempstead.
10 poles cost £30 but I think this is increasing to £50 in October (message isn't exactly clear from the council; they seem to think that a Pole is 125SqM).
This includes water but apparently not much else, we are council managed.
The council is looking to offload the allotments at present but this seems to have slowed to a dead stop.
Rid
whole plot is approx 75ft x 25ft (they vary a bit) half plot approx 35ft x 25ft.
total cost was £51. can't remember the break down on the prices tho. think the half was £19 but not sure now as our rents are due in sept/oct
£30 per 10 pole, agreed at AGM yesterday. We only charge what we need to run the site.
half plot £25 full £47.50 (I think, can't find last years bill. We go Sept to Sept) 3 water tanks between 21 plots, for which we're truely thankfull. Last year some wood chippings but that seems to have stopped.
Still waiting for the council to provide all that they promised a few years ago when they sold off some of the sites !!!!
No tarmac roads, no free slabs/shed/toilets/skips/buildings/manure, I'll stop now. :'( ;D :-*
We are still at £24 for 10 Poles... :-X
We pay £80 for about 200 m2
40 for half that.
Fed says our charges are 20p per square meter Full
10p per square meter concessionary
but as we have legal fees related to going self-managed we're charging more.
I have a 7m x 25m plot on a slef managed site in Southend, Essex and it costs me £56 per year, including water and association fee(no hosepipe ban here yet!)
£18 for a 10 pole plot, no facilites except a water trough, but we do get the grass cut every 4 weeks :) going up £23 next year I think I remember :-\
Still 22p per square metre, same as last year but we now have a composting toilet and 70 nearly full wheelie bins dotted around the site so's everyone has access to water :)
Our full plot is £30 for the year and we have a tap on the field. The only problem is out of nine allotments only three full and two halves are actually tended regularly. We have scythed the neighbouring plot two years running and have to cut a path to our plot. We meet the allotment holders every year, they come for a bit, and then we don't see them again. It is such a shame.
The average A4A rent currently stands at £4.72 per pole, and through the magic of statistics I can be 95% confident that the average rent nationally is somewhere between £4.02 and £5.43 per pole, and 50% of us have a rent somewhere between £3.00 and £5.73 per pole.
Plenty of time left to add your site rent to the survey - don't include any discounts, we'd like to compare just the standard cost of a 10 pole plot. Thanks.
£100 to include water, manure and skip.
Private landlord.

How big a plot is that Betula, 10 pole?
Our rent was increased from £20 to £40 for a full plot, no plots on site are the same size, my husbands half plot is twice the size of my full plot ???
any new plots are now half plots and they pay £20 rent plus £26.50 subs
Plots vary in size at our allotments in Didcot Oxfordshire though most are about 10 pole, but price is same for all £22 with concessions for OAP's

I'm guessing that for a 10 pole plot the rent would be £40 + £26.50 == £66.50?
This is how the leage table currently looks.

I'm repeating your last year's calculation for our circumstances..that was £0.30 per pole.. ;D
Nothing changed for this year... ;D

30p per pole? A good life indeed. :)
£29 for half plot, water on site and toilets, onsite shop for growbags, etc and community hut.
Some of that is NSALG and association membership.
I think there are discounts for OAP's etc.
£65 for a 10 rod plot.
Includes water (and hosepipe use when allowed).
Council cut the grass down the central path a couple of times a year.
Also a few competitions and a barbeque held at another site.
No loos, lockers or anything like that. Site completely insecure.
On a private site in our village,10 plotseach of about 660 yards sq, no water supply, but a bargain at £5.00/year

This is the frequency distribution of rents. The height of the bar represents the percentage of us paying rent in the range of the bar. So for example nearly 35% of us pay rent in the range £2/pole to £4/pole while only 5% of us pay rent in the range £8/pole to £10/pole.

Here's the latest league table.
Average rent is £4.64 and the national average is, with 95% condifence, somewhere between £3.96 and £5.33, and this compares with last year's national average rent estimated to be somewhere between £2.89 and £4.22, and most likely to be £3.55.
6 pole plot
Water troughs
Toilets
Compost
Roadway to drive in and park next to plot
Gates and fenced off
Two rubbish trailers a year
£51.00 + £7.20 water charge = £58.20
10 pole plot = £85.00 + £12.00 water = £97.00
Concession has been reduced to 25% from 50% only up to 10 poles
:-\
I should add that seeing as I (for I please read LB Merton) am out on top, then I should point out that from this Autumn those who have not elected to go self managed will be paying the "Gold Service" charge of £19 per rod.
OC
If its not too late to join in, this year I am paying £23.70 (plus £28.90 water !! - why so much?) for 340 square metres.
Next year will be £65.00 (plus £35.00 for water, making £100 total). Can't say I'm too happy about that.
Not too late at all winecap, keep them coming, the more the merrier.
This year £5.75 per rod, 2011 was £5.20. Includes water, wood chippings, chopped leaves.
Be interesting if results could be broken down by town or county.

We're just not a big enough sample for that Alex. At 41 data points we can't estimate the national average to better than plus or minus 60p, breaking it down even by county would be meaningless.
The University of Leiscester analysis (http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/press/press-releases/2011/november/researchers-dig-out-huge-variations-in-allotment-charges) is the best national survey there's been for a while (and amoungst its problems it rounded all the rents to the nearest 25p per pole so it needlessly threw away some useful information there) but they only sampled primary councils and to get anything like the full picture you need to know what parish councils and independent sites are charging too.
My gut feeling is that council rents are essentially random and have very little correlation to geography or even to level of service but are almost entirely set by the political whim of the council. However, with self-managed sites that set their own rents and run their affairs without any state subsidy I would expect to see a much tighter grouping around an ecconomic rent of around £2.50 to £3.50 per pole, though that could easily double if the site association was renting its site. But that's just a hunch.
It might be interesting one day to get a list together of all the UK sites and do a major analysis.
The University of Leiscester analysis give us a bit of a peek at the per-county picture, but with just a few samples per county only from the primary councils it's really not much of a picture. I would imagine if all the parish and private sites were included this would look very different, though whether it would reveal any underlying trend I wouldn't like to say. Certainly there's no trend that jumps out at me from this limited analysis.
I would note however that the £7.30/pole rate in Newbury is higher than the County average in all but one of the 36 counties sampled, and more than 75% higher than the Berkshire average of £4.25/pole. ;)
97 sq mtrs £25.63.
I should have added that Edinburgh council currently charge £80 per 200 sq yards plot and £40 for a half plot. The sites are generally well-equipped. Toilets, water, composting etc

Hi Ian, thanks for th PM. I'd assumed 660 sq yards, but that's still a very big allotment at over 21 poles, and all for £5.00? That's outstanding value.
Latest estimate of the national average rate is somewhere between £4.29 and £5.69 per pole, and most likely £4.99 per pole, so compared with our last year's survey of £3.55 per pole indications are that nationally rents have risen sharply this year, maybe in the order of 40%.
Just got the bill from the Council today, and it is £63.80 plus £12 water charge = £75.80, and the concession for OAP has gone down from 50% to 25%. I cannot pay this until the end of the month when I get my pension. :( :( We do have toilets, and compost so will pay up soon. I think I have a full plot, although I orginally asked for half but the Council gave me one plot, then I couldn't have it, then they said I could and then I got whole not half, so after I had planted my apple, pear, plum tree I decided to keep it, then they came and said I should only have half a plot, but in the end I have got it all. Not too sure that they know what they are doing. That was 8 years ago before everyone wanted an allotment and a lot of the site was uncultivated. It was my lovely private garden, but now it is very busy, but I am not complaining as everyone deserves their private space.
Ours in Colchester Essex 88sq mts inc water is £28.
This is the frequency distribution from the University of Leiscester national survey of primary councils. It's a very good illustration of why a simple average really don't tell you the whole picture. It shows how almost half of the councils are charging a rent in the range £2.00 to £4.00 per pole, and that probably illustrates the national picture better than talking about the average rent. Nite though, this was last year's survey and rates seem have gone up quite a bit since then, and it's only a survey of the big councils, the picture amoungst parish councils and private sites is likely to be different.
My plot's 600 square yards - you're right, Unwashed, it is massive, too big for a lot of people, and there are hedges to cut as well - and it's going up to £90/year.
Thanks for doing this Unwashed it must take quite a bit of time.
You're very welcome Alex. I enjoy it, it's a pleasure and a distraction and I'm grateful to BAK for suggesting I kicked it off.
Keep them coming, the more the merrier.
On our plot member are charged £15.00 per year which includes water, insurance, and free use of rotavator and strimer (Fuel excluded) also NASLG membership.
A 10 pole plot on our site in North Hertfordshire is £118 per year, no charge for water (even though we do have water).
Two years ago it was £52! >:(
we have just measured our new plot...it measures 17ft by 80ft and we pay £20 a year, includes water, and i do believe wood chippings and manure when it is delivered.
From Oct 2012 rent increases from £10.50 per rod eg 25.5sq meters to £18.00 plus one off yearly £4.95 water rate :'(
Best estimate of the national rate is now between £4.57 and £5.98 per pole, with the rate most likely to be £5.27 per pole. That really does look to be significanly more expensive than last year's best estimate of £3.55 per pole. If your rate is above £6.75 that puts you in the top quartile so you can feel a bit hard done-by, and anything less than £3.00 per pole and you're in the bottom quartile and are getting a pretty sweet deal.
This is what the league table looks like now.

I've just been given a half plot, which I would think equates to aprox 75 ft. X 20ft. Water is free. For this I pay £37 per year. Next year the fee will go up by 25%.
I have a 10 pole plot on a site run by Brickhill Parish Council in Bedford. It's my second year, and rent has remained at £52 for the year. This includes water; there are no other charges.

Yes it is but let me point out that I have nothing to do with it!!
Here in North Wales, and considering the shambles the council is making of running our new allotments, we are assuming the rent is unchanged at £25 pa for 300sq metres.
There was a £20 water supplement the first year (until we've worked out how much the water will cost), but we've heard nothing, so that's what they'll get.
My plot is 450sq m. This year I paid £58 and next year with the increase it will be approx £62 this includes water. My plot is in Gloucester
rent for the next Year (from 1st Oct 2012) Full plot £48 Half plot £24.50 inclusive of water.
The sad news is they want us to think about self manageing in the future. Which for the big sites I can see working but not for the smaller sites of 3 plots to sites under 100 plots.
I'm the site rep for our site of 21 plots. If anyone has any advice for both the good and bad of this idea I would really like here from you. So please send me your e mails I will be most gratefull. Regards Taurus
10 rods on ours is £36 plus £1 for N&DAC membership (not optional). The £36 includes water charges, but they haven't broken it down so I'm not sure how much this is. They haven't put it up from last year, although the Council is "consulting" on putting it up a lot over the next 5 years. However the increases they are proposing are likely to be unlawful as they are not in line with other civic amenities (can't see them putting up swimming pool charges by 200%!)
