Title: Alderman peas
Post by: RobinOfTheHood on April 13, 2012, 14:47:58
Are they usually this colour?  ???

I bought this batch from Premier Seeds on Ebay, but the ones I bought from Asda yesterday are the standard pale green colour (3 packs for £4 incidentally, Unwins).

I would be interested to hear which ones germinate the  best.
I used to buy treated pea seeds but had to travel a long way to a Farmers Supplier so now use untreated ones.  I think the mice take  quite a few seeds.
Do remember to use gloves or wash your hands well after planting.

I've not had a very good germination rate with the treated seeds. I also wasn't aware I was getting treated seeds but...
I'd also be interested in the germination rate comparison

My Alderman grew to 7-8 feet.  Wonderful for picking and I find they taste good.  I am still using peas from my freezer from last  year.

Mine are more like 5-6 feet. Peas are very variable, so if you don't know how tall a tall variety is likely to grow for you, be prepared for anything. There are varieties which are said to reach ten feet!

As a bit of an experiment I've decided to try a four-way trial, so I've sown up two modules each of Telefono, Ambassador, Jumbo and Hurst Green Shaft..... Telefono I've grown before and it did well enough, and I find tall peas easier to harvest.... HGS is a lovely pea though much past mid season and the pea moth loves it as much as I do... the other two are new to me, Ambassador isn't exactly new so I thought I'd give it a go, Jumbo is pretty new and is advertised as making very large peas that still taste good.... we shall see..... there will be another sowing yeat, I wasnt three rows of peas, I have about a row sown so far...

Virtually all of my first batch, (600) from premier seeds have sprouted and are doing well, I was a little surprised at the colour. Thanks for the explanation. Put up good strong supports if they are going to live in a windy spot as they end up like a fence panel
