Hi folks
It's the first time i have grown onion from seed. The second leaves have formed and now the first leaves (I assume cotyledons?) are yellowing and withering.
I take it this is normal? Also should I remove them as they yellow or start to wither to make less onion-fly attracting smells or just let them die off and leave well alone? If they are supposed to be withering in the first place that is...
I think they will be fine, thinking back I think this happens to mine, but I never really took a lot of notice. I think I would leave them, and use fleece if onion fly a problem where you live. (Lucky as not had that one :-X)
Thanks pumpkinlover. I'm noticing a lot due to enthusiasm, it all being new and that wonderful state of mind that you get when those two combine. Being really scientifically minded doesn't help either lol. Really just needed some reassurance and there will be a few more episodes of that before the year is out ::)
No idea if onion fly is a problem here (Grangemouth). I've just got a medium sized garden and no one near me grows. I'd rather assume it was a problem until proved otherwise though. Carrot fly did a mischief on me last year before i learned about those little @$%*s and I don't want the same to happen to my onions. At the moment they are still in modules in a cold frame, open during the day, closed at night.
This year is a full on feed us for the year adventure as opposed to last years "Chuck some seeds in. What grows, grows" approach.
