Title: Water ban at Allotments?
Post by: newtona2 on March 26, 2012, 23:42:33
(also posted on the Allotment Movement board, but it's a lower traffic board so I hope you don't mind me posting here too....)

Not a hosepipe ban, we always have that, but our Council is refusing to turn the water on at the allotments because of the impending hosepipe ban.

We pay £66 per year in Tandridge, so I'm not very impressed.

I have sent a letter to the council with an attachment of the rules on the hosepipe ban for Sutton and East Surrey which clearly states it is a ban just for hosepipes, not watering cans etc. I suspect the Council want to be seen as being even more protective of our water.

Has this happened at your allotments?

I'd be keen to get a list of sites that do have the water on.

Regards,

Tony

|Well we pay for water direct (self managed) so it is a bit different but ours is only ever switched off by us over Winter..
Seems like a dumb miove to me!

At present Spelthorne Borough council have not mentioned turning off our water supply if a hose ban is enforced, but watch this space,!!!!!!!!
Our allotment rep has told us we can continue to fill our butts, but no watering if the ban comes into play.

Just to lighten the note,I watched 2 guys unloading and installing a 900 litre plastic container yesterday and due to the tap being 2 inch bore they decided to chop a 3 foot x 2 foot section out of the top so they could use scoop buckets,.............er.........wait for it.......yes ,when it was full(5 hours) the structure caved in on itself
as the plastic gave way,ive never larfed so hard watching 2 fellers trying to hold together a wobbly jelly
if I remember ill get a picture of the remains of the blancmange..... ::) :o

Fairly typical authoritarian overreaction I'm afraid Tony.  Councils do like to think of allotmenteers as their responsibiity rather than their customers.  If you have water on site then that's all part of the service that your rent pays for and the Council can't just turn it off - any hosepipe ban applied to allotmenteers as individuals, the Council has no right or duty to police it on behalf of the water company.

Newtona2, can you possibly lock this thread and just leave the one in Allotment Movement open for replies as we'll be having two conversations otherwise. Cheers.

Success! I wrote a letter of complaint, pointing out that the Water company ban is for hosepipes only and thus the council had no right to enforce a ban that did not involve hosepipes, and they have agreed they read the enforcement notice wrongly, and have now promised to turn the taps on this weekend.

Thanks for all replies.

Tony

Unwashed - I will lock this thread as suggested. Thanks.
