Have inherited a little pond with my new allotment plot. Apparently there were frogs in it last year. I haven't really had a good look at it yet as it's got pond weed over the surface. Should I be doing anything now to the pond. I read on the wildlife thread that the blackbirds eat tadpoles. Should I cover the pond with some netting and if so can I use any sort of netting, like the type I cover plants with? The pond weed is covering the entire surface of the pond, should I reduce it a bit, someone has said they would like some of the weed for their pond at home. Not sure how deep it is, will have to get a stick next time and measure. The water looks pretty healthy and fairly clear, not that I know anything about what it should look like!
If it is thriving without human interference, just leave it alone. What is wrong with blackbirds eating a few? it must keep the population to a viable level.
