Hi All,
My front garden is essentially 2 boarders about 3ft deep and about 10ft wide all but 1 hebe is left the rest died and have been removed. I have the entire thing covered in black membrane and wood chips and there are various holes for plants which i now need to fill.
I cant afford to buy much so trying to rely on my seeds this year most are a few years old but i am looking for something that might give me good ground cover to help surpress the couch grass and might look nice although flowers and smell are a bonus.
Any ideas??

Advice appreciated as always...

Hi What a lovely thing a brand new bed to plant up.
I often rely on a few really great perenials that are easy to grow from seed
Lupins, echinacea, lavendar, wallflowers and foxgloves
These four things give you colour all the way through and you can buy a big sack of daffs from wilkies in autum to give you spring colour.
As a stop gap whislt your perenials are growing or until the first car boots of the year where you can often get at least the lupins and lavendar tough annuals such as calendula, larkspur, sunflowers, cornflowers , cosmos can all still be sown now to give you lots of colour. Start them off in plugs. Also sweet pea wigwams are big impact tall and you only need a few plants to get them looking fab even if you have no seed a pot of germinated ones often just costs you 99p
I also use black knight buddleja and black elder to give color and structure and a bit of height.
I'm sure ive got some lupins, euphorbia and one or two echinacea seeds if you fancy giving them a go just PM me.
Good luck
How exciting, x sunloving
Hi Cam . Sometimes I think that an area of weed membrane and wood-chip gives a good break to the eye visually speaking , and looks neat too . :) Debs
Thanks guys lots of suggestions :)
(allergic to lupins though)
I have gone with the marigolds and/or poppys as a stop gap thanks sunloving and will look at sowing something more long term for next year and raise them in pots will there big enough and maybe some winter pansys in between. Like the idea of having lavender and it does well in other peoples gardens
Need to fill the holes with something as the couch grass is finding them :(
Grrrr ....to couch grass !
Yep front and back garden have it so i have been ruthless with the weed membrane and trying to keep on top of it :)
