Title: Microphone
Post by: Doris_Pinks on February 19, 2005, 12:08:02
Daughter is desperate to talk to friends in Australia, so we plugged in a microphone, and nothing! Running windows XP, and presumed it would automatically detect it and install, do I have to now find a download online, or is it just a matter of a button I am not pushing!!
Thanks

Have you been to Control Panel and tried the Add Hardware option? There is a trouble shooter in there that may be of use.
There is also the Sounds and Audio Devices option in there which too may be useful.

Thanks Eric, have done the sounds and audio option to no avail! (I always worry I will do more harm than good!) Will try the add hardware and see how I get on, thanks for that!  DP

Nope nothing! How I hate being a computer illiterate  :'(  (you would think after using the wretched things for 16 years I would have grasped it by now! ;D)  Any other ideas?? Please!!!! ;D  I bet it is a button I am completely missing, it usually is! :-[

which program are you going to use to connect with the friends in australia? Through MSN or something?

Did the microphone have installation instructions with it?  If not you could look on the manufacturers website for help, or do a google on it to see if you can find out if there is a driver or something you need for it.  I fin the best help is often found via google in tech forums where someone else is bound to have had the same problem before!

Idon't know if your problem has been solved yet, and I am sure you have already checked the following, if you have no harm done.

right click on speaker, bottom right on task bar
select open volume control and ensure the microphone mute box is not checked at the same time adjust the volume.
Close the window and then go back the the speaker icon again right click, now select Adjust audio properties. in this window select Test hardware and follow instructions. This will confirm is your mike is working correctly

Make sure your microphone  is plugged into the correct plug on your sound card, normally purple or shows a small microphone symbol

If the test shows all ok. then on your desktop select start , programs, accessories, entertainment,  and finally sound recorder and try recording and playing back a small message.

you do not as far as I know have to install software for a basic microphone as it is normally built into the sound card.
Hope this may be of some help
