Title: Spuds planted - too early?
Post by: Dandytown on March 13, 2012, 16:11:24
I planted my spuds yesterday and was wondering is the consesus that I planted too early.  They could have been chitted for longer but I have lots to do on my pumpkin patches and wanted to tick one more of the things to do from the list.

All my earlies are in, and the others will go in this weekend, weather allowing. After that I just don't have time, as I am too busy with the other areas!
They take a couple of weeks to come up and by then we rarely have frosty conditions here.

I guess they take about a month to show green and from then til mid May you will be on frost alert - get some packs of Poundland fleece and rhubarb leaves growing to cover their emerging shoots on cold nights.  You can cover them with earth but at the rate they grow it only protects for a night.

I've got 6 tubers in under cloches and the rest will go in end March.

But kudos guys nothing ventured nothing gained.

Earlies all in. Start on the Maincrop tomorrow.
Snug under shreded paper, grass clippings and compost.
(I hope!)

I've had to put all mine in at once because of time pressure, glad to hear others have as well, I shall be keeping a close eye on whatever difference it makes compared to my usual obsessive 'do it by the book' method. I always have to protect against late frost anyway.

I'm hoping to put mine in on the weekend, I have put 12 barrows of dug in rotted manure in to prep it, should come up like rugby balls (I hope)

I'm putting my Red Duke Of York  in at the weekend and probably Foremost the weekend after, as said frosts will be about up until mid May, so keep well earthed up or fleeced, most of us on our site got caught out in 2010 in May and had the tops burnt.  :'(      :o

Still humming and harring here.
We have such a wireworm problem, I might do better cutting my losses and planting as many seed potatoes as I can in the back garden, and grow more beans and things in the allotment.  :(
