We saw a lovely green woodpecker to-day on the large oak tree :)
Lucky you. We were a walk in woods today where I know the green woodpeckers frequent. We heard them - more than one, but never spotted one.
;)
I only hear the greens too, I have been lucky enough to have a greater spotted come to the feeders.... two, sometimes three times a day a fortnight ago. He hasn't been back since though.....they are stunning birds :D
We have 3 poplars. We've had both green and spotted. Lovely birds.
We have both round the site; Greater Spotted stick to the big trees and aren't easy to see, while the greens are scrubland birds, and turn up all over the site. There are occasional nuthatches and treecreepers as well.
It was a funny day on Wed,me and a friend were out walking dogs and we heard a woodpecker.....but it was much gentler than the Greater Spotted. So we immediatly thought Lesser Spotted and how lucky we were to hear one.
So there we were searching the trees for a glimpse, we only saw rooks and gradually realised it WAS the Rooks making this tapping noise. We still dont know if they were mimicking the woodpeckers or if its part of their vocabulary.
It certainly looked like they were laughing at us as we walked off feeling quite foolish at our mistake !! ::) ;D
All sorts of birds will tap on wood; I once heard what I was sure was a woodpecker, and it turned out to be a nuthatch pretending to be one.
